HELP Automatic shift **** not locking in place, shifting into neutral (video)

So you know how normally it wont let you move the shift **** down or up without pressing the release button, well it seems to not be the case for Neutral and Drive. To get out of park and reverse it still stays locked untill you leave the button pressed and then push down to d. But from there, i can actually bump the shift **** up from drive to neutral without pressing the button. Seems that its not locking in place and if i accidentally bump the **** itll go into neutral while driving.

That is a normal function of most automatic cars to be able to shift into neutral from drive and vice versa, there is nothing wrong.

I couldve sworn this never happened before unless this is the first time i accidentally bumped it. Not knocking infiniti and nissan i love them. Do you know if its locks into d after you stwrtdriving at higher speeds?

The only locking is to leave Park and maybe to pass through Reverse when going back to Park. I'm surprised I can't remember, I've only been driving mine for six years.

No it probably does not lock into D at higher speeds. I remember seeing a video a long time ago with a crappy animation about if somehow your gas pedal gets stuck down, and your brakes also fail then you can jam the car into neutral and coast to a stop.

All automatic cars I've owned have been like this. I've also only owned Asian automatic vehicles so domestics could be different?

This is normal for most auto cars, for example: if the brakes stop working, you can throw the gear into N right away (instead of leaving in D). Nothing to worry about. Gear shifter locks when moving from P to R or R to P. Would be nasty to accidentally slide the gear selector to R when you want to be in P.

I have gone from D to R before. Car DID NOT like that. Engine died. No damage though since the engine/transmission connection is hydraulic rather than mechanical. This was in a 1973 Olds Custom Cruiser, not my G.

I paid attention the past couple of days and there is a lockout to prevent you from moving from N to R. There is no lockout from D to N.
