New, Smaller Engines Coming to Infiniti - More Power

PARIS — Infiniti is developing a family of aluminum engines that will begin hitting the market within two years, promising more horsepower for its higher end cars.

The first of the new group to appear will be a 3.0-liter twin turbo
V-6. Infiniti plans to pair it with an electric hybrid-drive system to obtain 550 hp.

Infiniti officials are referring to the engine family as “downsized” — meaning that the powerplants will be physically smaller than the current engines they replace but deliver greater power.

The new engines are being developed separately from Nissan Motor Co.’s expanding product-sharing partnership with Daimler AG, says Francois Goupil de Bouille, vice president for Infiniti’s operations in Europe, Russia, the Middle East and Africa.

“We are creating these new engines in-house,” de Bouille said at the Paris auto show after unveiling the Q80 Inspiration, a full-size fastback concept car.

Infiniti says the Q80 concept represents a future vehicle the company will produce.

And that eventual car will carry one of the new engines, de Bouille says.
A statement from Infiniti said the new hybrid engine in a full-size car could yield fuel economy of about 42.8 mpg.

The engine development illustrates a separate path for Infiniti. The luxury brand is involved in a number of future products that rely on Nissan’s partnership with Daimler.

The partners opened an engine plant in Decherd, Tenn., this summer that is slated to manufacture a new family of downsized engines for both Infiniti and Mercedes-Benz vehicles.

But those engines were developed by Daimler.

Sounds great. What's not to like? I'm sure there'll be someone to chime in soon to tell me what's horribly wrong with the new yet to be built engines. Lol.

BUT, will it be a just an advertised 550hp? Or will they actually deliver a car with about 400 hp? Like our advertised 330hp that's roughly about 270..

I'm for it though. 3.0L turbo.. done.
