I was browsing several forums the other night and came across many reports from G35/G37 owners who reported oil burning issues with their cars. It seems like the issue is more prevalent in G35s, but does anyone know how likely it is to occur in a newer G37 (e.g., 2011, 2012 model year)?

Is there any chance that Nissan has rectified the original manufacturing defect for a certain model year onward?

Also... is the coupe (especially the IPL) more likely than the sedan to experience these issues?

This problem is common on the 350z/G35 VQ35DE Rev-Up motors. I don't think I've ever read about oil consumption for the VQ37HR motor. I would not worry about it, especially on a 11-12 vehicle. Plus you'd still most likely have warranty.

 

never had an oil issue, have an '08 coupe

doubt the newer models would have an issue like that.. it's basically the same motor

 

Yeah, that's a good point about the warranty, but I was planning on keeping the car (if I get one) for a long time (probably 10+ years), and for who-knows-how-many miles. So I just want to be as sure as I can that I won't end up having to pay $10k + to replace the engine after 100k - 125k miles. Has anyone ever driven one of these cars for 300k+ miles without any problems?

Also, what do you guys think about getting an '11 IPL coupe? Should I wait on a '12 instead, since '11 was the first model year for the IPL?

 

Please do not listen to this person. There are multiple threads about this engine burning oil. There is even a TSB on it.... Even on the 370Z forum...

 

Yeah, I just finished reading through the entire TSB thread (thanks for pointing it out, though). That was the first I'd heard about the VQ37VHR having the same oil consumption issues as the VQ35. This "revelation" sucks... I was leaning towards a G37 because I wanted something sporty and somewhat luxurious that also happened to be reliable (I.e., not a BMW, Benz, or Audi), but now I'm starting to have second thoughts.

Does anyone know whether or not, for the last few model years of the VQ37VHR, Nissan/Infiniti has improved whatever manufacturing defect originally caused the oil consumption/burning issues? In other words, did they rectify the defect starting with the 2011, 2012, etc. model years? Or has the engine's manufacturing process remained unchanged since '08/'09?

If you check your oil once a week you'll never have a problem.

On my previous 06 G35 6 speed I sometimes used a qt/1000 miles

On my current 2012 G37S 6 speed I've used as little as 1/4 qt between oil changes at 4k miles and as much as a qt.
This is not a problem to worry about if you just check your oil on the dip stick regularly.

Never had any oil consumption w/ our 07 G35 (now has 95k miles) and our 09 G37, has 68k miles. FWIW.

 

I have an '08 with 80k miles, doesn't burn a drop (synthetic since 16k miles) ... don't worry about it.

 

Oil consumption was a much more prevalent issue with the 05-06 rev-up g35/350Z than it is with the vq37, due to ring tolerance variances IIRC. This is well reported all over the interweb and g35driver. Sure, the 37 may have infrequent reports of consumption. But so do most makes. Hondas, mazdas, BMW, etc all have occasional consumption issues.

The OP should not be overly concerned with a widespread oil consumption problem on the 37. And the coupe and sedan and IPL all use the same engine, regardless if it is auto or manual - unlike the g35 rev-up which was manual only in the G35 model line.

The good news is that most of the consumption cases on vq engines occur in time for warranty coverage.

 

It's pretty rare on the VQ37VHR. I doubt you'll get it.

At 73k mine doesn't burn a single drop.

 

08 G37S 6MT with 39k miles. Never a drop burned, dino oil changes from day one. I drive rather calmly but still, i kinda doubt this is anywhere near a prevalent problem

 

Thanks to those who have responded. I know that several folks have recommended to just keep an eye on the oil level and top it off when necessary, but even if I were to continually replenish the oil, would that still result in issues at some point down the road? In other words, would the oil consumption issue itself cause problems? Or can an engine keep plowing ahead for several hundred thousand miles without any issues, as long as the oil level is maintained?

 

My Altima SE-R (VQ35DE) used to use a small amount and it was especially more prevalent with Mobil 1. I switched over to Pennzoil Platinum and it basically solved the small amount that was lost between changes. The VQ37VHR in my G37x is solid - no noticeable usage between changes and I'm also using Pennzoil Platinum/Ultra.
