oil consumption?? unsure whats going on...
Well guys having a small (potentially big) issue with my 08 coupe.. a little back story.- I sold my g35 coupe after having to deal with the whole oil consumption issues on the HR motors and got into my current g37.
I did an oil change myself within the first month of purchasing it. Drove it "spirited" but rarely over 4k rpm, and it didnt burn or leak any oil what so ever, I checked religiously. More recently, I had some test pipes put in so I guess I had been driving it a little more "spirited" than usual (still rarely saw over 4k rpm) and decided to check my oil a few days ago for the first time in about a month and.......

Well turns out its either low or I am just not getting an accurate reading. That was the second time I pulled it out so I feel like the reading is not as accurate as the first time. The first pull it was about mid way between teh two dots and the car had been sitting for over 24 hours. Now i've done plenty of research regarding oil consumption issues from my g35 I just dont see this heavy of a drop in oil as being normal. Given I have followed the proper procedures to get an accurate as possible reading, it seems significantly low and i'm just really hoping its not burning it all up. Havent checked for leaks yet with the engine cover still in place but to start burning or having oil disappear mid way through an oil change? Seems strange as the oil level remained constant the first couple thousand miles of purchasing the car.
Any body with any suggestions? Its been a total of about 2000 miles since the first oil change i did.
Thanks in advance

On my previous 06 G35 6sp I sometimes used a qt per 1k miles and other times a qt/2k miles. I traded it in at 171796 miles with 53 oil changes for my present 2012 G37S.
On my last oil change a few weeks ago I was about 1/4 qt low after a round trip from NJ to Florida. On the previous oil change prior to my Florida trip I was a qt low. I also do not exceed 4k rpm with either vehicle.
It seems the 6sp manual transmissions sometimes result in some oil consumption. I went thru the oil consumption test with my G35 and it did not use enough to qualify for a replacement engine.
To obtain an accurate reading I usually check my oil after the vehicle has set overnight or in a mall parking lot after sitting on level ground for a half hour or more.
I have gotten lazy with my G37S and have had all 12 oil changes done at the dealer.
Just check your oil weekly and you'll be fine.

I'm about 2 Qts low at each oil change. My change intervals are every 4000 miles. I drive the hell out of the car and love reving the engine. It doesn't sound like you have much deviation from what Telcoman and I see. I was a bit concerned at first, but have seen a few other people comment on this. I went as far as to check my spark plugs for fouling. Just keep an eye on it, as Telcoman said. You should be good.
^if 2 quarts is actually normal between changes than I would assume im on par. At the moment my guess is its about 1-1/2 quarts low and ill probably do another oil change this month or next.
If that is the case though than that is very reassuring to know, ill just have to keep a close eye on it, i just really hate the paranoia. thanks for the input.

i broke it in hard. oil change every 3k or so with redline 5w30 except the first change was 20 miles after seating the brake pads and used regular dino oil. then again a few hundred later. after 1 full normal oil change i switched to redline. i drop about 1/8th-1/4" from full on the dipstick every 3k. most of that ends up in my catch can i drain every 1000 or so. you need a catch can to determine if its blowby youre losing or bad rings/compression.

I just wanted to confirm that mine was not excessive. in about 2500 the oil has gone down about 1/4 inch since my last oil change so i'm assuming thats normal.

1/8th-1/4 inch every 3k miles is not bad at all. And I actually remember reading in the manual that losing some oil between change intervals is completely normal with these cars. I think any sports car, to some degree burns a slight bit of oil, specially when driven hard.

no it's not. and if i setup my catch can like i had on my subis, id run theblow by oil back to the engine block instead of just catching it and removingit from the system. that way every 3k i'd probably lose zero. that oil you seethere again is only about 1000 miles. times that by 3 and there’s my 1/4".i think dot to dot on the dip stick is almost 1qt of oil.
i have to disagree that its burning oil in the normal sense (unless you havea bad motor). a good seat on the piston rings should lose zero. but since allmotors have valve and crank breathers, you lose the oil by getting it blown outof the motor and then re-circulating it back to the manifold where its burnedup in compression (not good for AFR or power). Hence why race teams all use a catch can orAOS and depending on the motor configuration just catch it or send it back tothe block (subis have to send it back since the motor sits sideways).
i think nissan and subi say 1qt maybe 1.5qt is normal. but in my eyes thatsnormal for the general public. to an engine builder or a race team thats S***.if you're burning that much oil from low compression you need a new motor! but for the general public they dont need 100%max power like others do. this is why race engine are broken in very hard vswhat a manufacture says. im sure a manufacture knows a hard break in is thebest but legally they cant say that!! so many people would die or get hurt ifthey told you how to really do! Same withbreaking in brake pads. Nissan cant tellyou legally to drive 60, slam on the brakes to 10, go WOT back to 60 and repeat6-8 times till you brake fade and almost fail haha.
Well my Acura/Honda NSX has 85K miles, is 23 years old,
and since I've been an instructor I've tracked it for school events for almost 18 of those years. Guess what? No engine oil burning between oil changes of 5K and I'm using Mobil1 10w/30 since break-in. My 2012 G37S has 20K miles and I've done some tracking with it, and use the same 5K mile oil change interval with 5w/30 Mobil 1 oil and filter and I don't burn any oil with it either. I've also added an engine oil cooler to help out during the hot summers here and on the track. Most Japanese cars I've owned over the years have had little to no engine oil burning
as compared to the German cars I've owned.
All my cars have been broken in fast but with care, which means I vary the speed of the car and or engine during the break in period, and I like to use the RPM's when needed. However, I never, repeat never REDLINE the RPM's of any car for any reason in hopes of getting more speed or power. Not needed and most power/torque curves don't support doing that so why bother. The only problem I've ever had with any engine came when I blew a main water hose on the NSX while on the track and spun the car doing 80+mph. When I got the car home, replaced all the main hoses, bled the cooling system and the car is running just fine.
I'm thanking the Mobil 1 oil for helping the engine on that one. JM2C
