1st gear slipping?
1st gear slipping?
I finally picked up my new to me 2008 G37s Coupe 6MT and love it! I am coming from a 2007 Honda Accord Coupe (AT) so this is leaps and bounds more fun to drive.
However, I noticed that sometimes when I'm starting from a stop in first gear, I get a minor but noticeable stuttering/vibrating/shuttering. It doesn't happen every time which is what is confusing me (but it does happen more often than not). It happens kind of randomly even after the car has been warmed up. I'm still wondering if it is me getting used to the clutch and catch point but it doesn't quite feel right (my Honda S2000 was easy to start off smoothly in 1st). 2nd through 6th are fine and dandy so I'm wondering if first gear is just a bit finnicky in this car. I took the car to a mechanic before I purchased it and he confirmed the clutch was fine. I don't believe the transmission fluid has been changed yet (32K miles on the car), could a flush help with this? Or is this a minor quirk with the 2008 6MT G37s and I need to learn how to drive it?
I'm debating going to a Carmax or somewhere similar to test drive another 6MT this weekend to compare. Otherwise the car is bomb.com!

I get a bit of that too if I don't give it enough throttle soon enough when taking off. I think its just characteristic of this car. Other g37 6mt's I test drove had similar effects.
Thanks Jsolo! After more research, it looks like this is just the way the clutch is. I found the thread on the clutch spring so hopefully that will help.
Nothing short of a new clutch and fly wheel really helps. I got the assist spring from Jsolo and it helps the pedal feel by a ton, but I still get what you've described. Its just the way the car works.

Thanks for the replies all. I was playing around with the clutch on my way into work in traffic and I get the shudder with too much or too little throttle. Releasing the clutch really really slow seems to help but I can still get it to shudder this way as well when not matching the throttle up perfectly.
I can get a good start in 1st maybe 25% of the time. I feel like I'm learning to drive manual again.

Indeed! Reverse works great however. It pulls smoothly from a stop but once I go back to first, I have to really think about my clutch/throttle balance. A minor quirk to owning an otherwise great car!
