Dirty Rear Differential Fluid?
Should I have used the sarcasm smiley?
Of course they didn't look at it. You can't look at it unless you remove the plug from the differential and drain it out. So any "inspection" that tells an owner that they need to change it becasue it's "dirty" or 'low" is BS. If they were being honest instead of trying to scare owners into getting service they'd be truthful and say that they recommend changing it becasue it has been in service for xxx miles rather than to tell them lies.

The tranny fluid is close to the color it would be when new. The smell is from the sulfuric pressure additive in the lubricant (normal, not worn). This picture clearly shows the fill hole (located to the right and above the drain). Both use allen head bolts.

The sales tactic' that i was given was that the 09's came with two different fluids, one was meant to be a lifetime fluid, the other wasn't, and there was no real way to tell which I had. So, they recommend changing it to be safe. Since I'm a fan of changing fluids I agreed with about 28k on the car. I'll likely do it again at 60 to 80k miles.
Bumping this old thread. I'm a little overdue with my x sedan. Almost 34,000 miles.
What weight does the X need? Lost my owners manual, of course.
Motul has 80w90 and Redline has 75w90.
4QT total should be plenty for both front and rear?

The dealer gets $130.00 to change out the diff. and $170.00 to change out the brake fluid. I bought the Motive powerbleeder with adaptor, 2 qts of 75W90 Mobil 1 synthetic and 2 quarts of super blue. Total outlay was @ $125.00. I'm going to do the work this weekend.
I have always changed the Diff and Trannie Fluid at 30K intervals. The dealer here said it's not necessary to change the diff fluid that often since they have been using synthetic fluid for many years now.
