Question Newbie Qtn regarding SC

Hi All! I searched the forum here and 370 site but can't really find detailed information on "safely" modding our car with SC. Most of the discussions were on TT. All my previous cars were N/A and I have zero experience with FI systems so hope to get some better knowledge here on modding the car with SC.

First of all, TT systems are not considered because I have 5AT (they don't offer 6MT here in Taiwan ) and the weather here is very hot for 9 months of a year. I want to try out boosting a car but at the same time it still needs to be good for daily driving. So, it comes down to the SC. Hope you knowledgable peeps here can help me and other FI newbies here. Thanks a lot in advance.

1) Do we need to mod/upgrade transmission for SC boost?

2) If SC boost the G to 350~400 or even to 450 RWHP, Do we need to enhence our engine so it will have longer lifetime and be relatively "safe" for everyday driving? What parts of the engine do we need to enhence? Also, ermm, i step to redlines a lot............

3) What type of tuning and modding are must do's for having a SC?

4) If I can't find a good tuner here in Taiwan (which is most likely to happen), should I even consider getting SC? What problems are likely to happen without having a good tuner to work on my G?

5) Will our engine blow up with SC boost and without good tuning?

6) If it happens that the SC is installed, what do we all need to be careful with? Maintenance?

These are just the questions I can think of. I'm a newbie and probably have missed out some important questions. So, if there are any other areas we need to prepare or be careful with, please let me and all other FI newbies know.

Thanks
Jeff

1) depends how far you go with power. valve body and torque converter upgrades are recommended. Trans oil cooler is a good addition too.

2) I wouldn't crack the engine open and install internals at 400-450whp. Terry has a G sedan with GTM TT and he makes over 400whp. His car is a DD and he hasn't had any issues for over a year. Maybe even two years now.

3) Other than tranny upgrades, everything you need should be included with the kit already (GTM and Stillen). i'm not sure if they require dyno tuning like GTM's TT kits, you have to wait until the kits are out.

4) You have to wait and see as far as tuning. Stillen I believe is plug and play as far as tuning goes. Comes with the required maps I would assume. Dunno about GTM.

Thanks so much for the input,

1) I think no one has come out with valve body and torque converter upgrades for our car yet? Guess will have to wait.

2) The only reason I'm worried about the FI to our engine is because it's on a pretty high compression ratio. It's great to know your friend hasn't had problem with TT for almost two year!

3&4) Yah, guess have to wait til both kits are out and tested.

1) GTM Motorsports

2) You can contact him and see if he's had any issues, his screenname is 'terrycs' I think.

3) Yep

First thing to keep in mind ... the money you are about stuff under your hood approaches the cost of a new Honda. Second ... sooner or later, your car is gonna go down for maintanence or repairs, so you would need a backup plan and additional funds since this is your daily driver. With that out of the way, TT also works fine with the 5AT ... even with the A/C on in the summertime here in Southern CA. I have almost 20K boosted miles.

It depends on how much torque is added and how hard you drive your car. Safe thing to do is install transmission cooler and shift kit for starters. Clutch packs and torque converter next when the time comes.

I haven't had any issues yet, but it really depends on how hard you drive your car. I take it to redline once in a while too but it's kinda hard to do in traffic. The torque probably hits the motor earlier than it does on the TT, so this maybe something new. As for parts, if you are going to go through the expense of opening up your motor, you may as well go all in.

A tune will be required for the motor to run right. It will either be a packaged tune or tuned on a dyno. Aftermarket exhaust is needed. Good intstruments are also highly recommended.

I would honestly be concerned if I didn't have anyone nearby that can tune my car. Who is going to install the SC or TT for you? If you are installing the hardware yourself, you are probably capable of uploading a "standard" tune.

The motor will be tuned one way or another. But the potential to blow the motor (with or without internals) will ALWAYS be there with any forced induction. The install and tune is only the beginning of the journey!

Careful monitoring of fluid levels AND condition for starters.
