Trying to reset the ECU

Ok guys here is my issue. I turn the car on wait 3 secs, hit the pedal 5 times wait seven seconds hold the pedal down for 10 secs and the light starts to blink, I then release the pedal and try to wait another 10 sec but everytime the light stops blinking and stays on.. When I shut the car off an restart it the light is NOT on. I so FN confussed right now, I just may take it in and ask the dealer to scan it and or reset the ECU.

So I'm getting stuck between 4-5 I have tried to go all the way to the end but step 7 the light is not blinking just on. :/

1. Confirm that accelerator pedal is fully released, turn ignition switch “ON” and wait 3 seconds.
2. Repeat the following steps (2a and 2b) procedures quickly five times within 5 seconds.
2a. Fully depress the accelerator pedal (HARD).
2b. Fully release the accelerator pedal.
3. Wait 7 seconds, fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for approx. 10 seconds until the CEL starts blinking.
4. Fully release the accelerator pedal (while the CEL is still blinking)
5. Wait about 10 second.
6. Fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for more than 10 seconds.
7. Fully release the accelerator pedal (The CEL light will continue to blink).
8. Turn ignition switch to “OFF” position and now you can start the car. The CEL light should be gone.
If the CEL light continues to remain ON, repeat the above steps. Timing is EXTREMELY critical to resetting the ECU.

I talked to one of the Techs at the dealership he said it is not always a good idea to reset the ECU because the car tries to adjust to your driving habits so when you reset it has to learn all over again. He said it's almost like setting your computer back to factory settings everytime you get off. Not always needed.

Yea but I'm running into a issue after my HFC install. Car sputter/stumbles/breaks up and then takes off at 65% or more throttle any gear or RPM.. I have no CEL on so I thought about resetting everything to see if that gets rid of the issue?

Did they charger you for it or ask you why.. I'm also thinking about having a tech do it but not for $140.

Timing is everything. I did it literally 25 times before making it reset lol

Why not just leave the negative cable off the batt for 6 hours?

I reset my ECU last night after having a Stillen Gen 3 CAI installed....rather than do the "foot/pedal dance" I took the easy approach and disconnected the negative terminal over night (10 hours total). Woke up this morning, let the car run for 5 minutes, turned it off, and then drove it HARD three times (to teach the car right off the bat that I drive aggressively), turning off the engine between each run (per a suggestion in a separate thread). All seems good. Lost all my radio, phone, trip mileage, and memory seat settings, but that was to be expected (interesting that the clock on the nav system was correct though). At any rate, for those of you opting for the battery disconnect option to reset the ECU, I would suggest turning off the option that moves the steering column up and the seat back when you turn off/exit the vehicle prior to disconnecting the battery. That way, when you reconnect the negative terminal, the seat will already be in your saved position and you won't have to fiddle around w/ finding the "sweet spot" again.

DOes this ECU reset really work? I had my car Dyno Tuned with COBB AP, and never reset my ECU before or after the tune. Now would this resetting really make any diffrence at all? I know the ECU would half to relearn everything, but also read that the ECU ony does this for a while, then reverts back to OEM Settings? not sure what it does to a tuned ECU? but my guess is as good as yours! LOL. if this really helps, I'll do the Batt disconnect overnite. But not sure if worth it or not! anyone can chime in on this?

slightly updated reset ecu / check engine soon light

Just a note or two on the reset procedure:

3. (Do not do the 7 seconds count until you completed the 5 seconds count on the previous step) Wait 7 seconds, fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for approx.

There is another procedure mentioned as per a shop manual in which instead of the 2x 10 secounds counts, it's a 20 seconds count. That does not seem to reset the CEL.
