Getting a new tranny...infiniti sounds fishy.
Although the tech who rode in my car the first time convinced me (or I should just say I was convinced) that my tranny noise wasn't that much different from a new car (400+ miles), I agreed. But his thought was that the noise was related to how beefy the tranny was. So I thought if that is true - then it shouldn't get worse. And if it did - I would bring it back in. But I have to say that even though the tech thought the tranny wasn't much different from a new one, he did offer to swap the tranny on the first visit - but I decided it might be premature. Now however, the noise is worse. Shifting from 2nd to 3rd you hear a "spin up" whine too. The whine is also becoming more of a shrill and really bad from 3-4k rmp. In the morning when the temps are below freezing, if I don't warm the car up, just get in and go, 3rd gear at 25mph produces a "horn" type sound. So I took the car to the dealer today, same tech, and the tranny is being replaced. So far I have been happy how the dealer has handled this and I'll post an update when I get it back. I also asked the tech if the replaced tranny would be any different and he didn't think so but was going to check. I am really concerned I'll be back in another 10k miles - particularly if its the same tranny and no update or TSB.
My tranny was swapped today and the whine is gone. The difference is night and day. This is the car I test drove. This is the car I wanted to buy and bought. Shifting is just like new - still notchy but thats OK. But I don't hear that constant whine. Just to note - the shifter does shake in neutral but that never bothered me. The hard shifting from 1st to 2nd is also gone and the throw out bearing is super quiet. All in all I could have lived with hard shifts, a slightly noisy throw out bearing and the other stuff, but not the whine. It was really bad. This appears to be a design problem - not normal. I hope Infiniti figures it out. I don't want to replace my tranny every 10k - even if its under warranty.
Haven't posted about this problem in my car, or posted much at all...but just wanted to let people know that I had the transmission whine, and also what I can only describe as a high pitched chime/vibration that lasted for one second shifting from high-rpm 1st-to-2nd and 2nd-to-3rd.
Another kind of bad thing I noticed in my car before taking it in is when revving in neutral (parked) the car would sputter and throttle itself, like it was hitting fuel cut at redline, except it never made it to redline. It would start doing this at various RPMs, usually between 3k and 5k. Not sure if this is related to the transmission since the only thing moving in the transmission when the car is parked should be the input drive.
Anyway, the dealer is replacing my transmission. The tech said the transmission is way too loud. 08 White G37S (manual), 21000 miles...some spirited driving here and there but I'm pretty nice to the car...I mean, I'm on my original tires and they still have life to them.
