Rear Axle Squeek

Just turned 2,600 miles on my 6MT that I had since April, so I decided to take it in for an oil change. The service tech asked how's it doing, so I mentioned I had a minor squeek or chirp when I start moving from a stop, coming from the rear of the car, and it's probably the axel. I had seen this issue on this site before so I thought it was worth a mention although it seems minor.

He checked the SBs and there was one on this issue. They had it fixed the next day and this what they did per the work order:

Removed both rear axle, lube both driveshafts flange surface with Molykote M77 Grease, and replace both driveshaft side flange bolts (6 per side), and 6 per side. Replace both side with new cotter pin.

The chirp is gone. I thought I'd mention it here as someone else might be hearing that noise. I think it's minor, but I have no idea of what happens if it is ignored.

Hey thanks for the heads up man... I've also heard of a few G owners with the same sound coming from their axles but I am yet to hear it... Glad you got it fixed...

My car had this noise the day I bought it with 10 miles on it.. I just want to enjoy it a bit more before I let it sit in the damn Warranty bay.. I've only had it for 2 weeks.

One more thing. Before you take it in call and make sure they have the bolts. They would have fixed mine the same day but had to air freight the bolts. In the first place, I don't why they don't fix it before it's sold, and second, then don't carry the parts.

I have this same problem. I'm waiting for the 3750 mile mark to get an oil change and have them inspect it. It's a high pitch chirp when you first start it up and begin moving. If I'm at a stop light and begin moving, it doesn't seem to happen as it may be 'warmed up' or something. Only seams to happen from a cold start.

1. The dealership makes no money from warranty work. 2. The tech has to spend valuable time doing the warranty work when they could be doing another revenue-generating activity. 3. Dealerships don't spend money on parts inventory they might not use for a long time. Just a little insight into why they don't proactively fix it.

Had this same thing, the dealership took care of it in one day, no problems, parts were in stock.

I did have to get the tech to stand next to the back of the car while I started and stopped in the dealership lot a bunch, but other than that no hassles.

Yep, that's the same sound and at first it only chirped from a cold start just like yours. Later, I started to hear it more often, but faint when warmed up.

I have the same problem. It started at around 700 miles. I wish i saw this thread before i took my car in today. Got a loaner to drive around which is cool. But since im in Hawaii they have to order the new rear axle bolt kit and reschedule an appointment when the part comes in. Good thing the warrenty covers it and i get a loaner again.

Be careful, my friend with his un-modded G37S just snapped his axle at the dragstrip (track was pretty sticky with VHT).
