That's what I think also.... Although there are motor oil tests that show the effect of the oil after thermal-stresses and those get dark in color.

The G37 Amsoil is also getting dark now, but this oil is good for at least 7000 miles...I'm sure of it. I think it's just the way the engine block breathes.

I use the same oil in my supercharged 4Runner. That does not seem to get as dirty at all, nor does it even show any consumption after 80000+ miles!

I have a 100K warranty on this so I'm not worried right now :-)

Oil color is a useless indicator of oil or engine health.

True! I really hope all cars have oil presure gauge. That way we all know when we need to change oil.

An oil pressure gauge doesn't tell you when to change oil either. The ONLY way to tell if oil is used up is an oil analysis.

if the oil is within it's manufacturer stated specs and life...then it's a useless indicator.

Though when the oil is REALLY REALLY dirty it's time to change since it probably hasnt been changed for over 20K miles!

Costco is running a deal for 5W and 10W30 Synthetic M1 oil. 8 bucks off 6/1qt's if anyone is interested. BTW, when you do an oil change, how many quarts does it take?

Ok, I can't resist anymore. Like Todd says, oil threads are SO much fun. Almost as fun as NO2 threads!

Synthetic oil is "pure", no impurities like conventional oil. Why? Because it's created in a controlled environment. Impurities tend to make oil break down faster so synthetics last longer.

If you like conventional oil, change it more often. 3K miles is about average for normal use. If you're racing or in a "dirty" area (lots of dust, for instance) change it more often. I've always thought the "or three months" idea is BS. Others disagree.

I use 5.4 quarts of full synthetic with a new filter in my G37 and will change it every 5K miles after the first change at 3K miles. Same for the G35.

I use about 5 quarts of full synthetic in my supercharged GSR and change it every 5K miles unless it's autocross season. Then I change it every 3K miles. All changes with a new filter.

I use 7 quarts of conventional oil in my Alfa Romeo and top it off when it goes 1 or 2 quarts low with a filter change about every 15K miles. It leaks/burns oil so much the oil's always fresh. Hey, it's Italian.

LBNL, listen to Todd. His posts are on the mark IMO.

The only glitch I see in your post is that a strict reading of Infiniti's oil change interval results in a 3,750 change interval. I prefer to avoid any potential warranty arguments, even though I have great dealer. So, I will change every 3,750 miles just to keep Infiniti happy.

A friend of mine is the Wholesale manager at Lokey Mercedes/Infiniti in Clearwater. He said they have a customer with a new G37 that had an oil change done at another shop. They mucked something up that fried the engine. Infiniti is not covering the repairs under their warranty due to work not being done at the dealership.
