Is this a "must do" kind of thing? If I were to not clean the throttle bodies, will it shorten the life of the engine? Sorry, i'm not very familiar with having to clean parts of my engine besides the intake filters.

If the buildup of deposits gets bad enough it could lead to poor idle characteristics. I think that's about the worst of it though.

NO! There are dedicated throttle body cleaners out there for this.

All cars both manual and automatic have throttle bodies. It's not a recommended scheduled maintenance item. It can't hurt the car, do it as often as necessary. If you take off the intake tubing and if it's dirty inside there clean it. I have neglected to do this but will probably clean mine tomorrow and check it every 10K miles or so.

Yes they can be found at your local auto parts store. There are too many brand names or types to list. Just ask the guy at the counter. Or google "throttle body cleaner".

Just did this to my coupe a few weekends ago.

I was having issues where the car would almost stall at start up or in stop and go traffic. Now its completely gone and the car runs like new.

The amount of gunk and residue that came off was remarkable. I actually had to throw away the shop towels after I was done as they were completely black.

This is going on my list for annual/bi-annual maintenence.

To the OP: I owe you a beer.

The 3.7L engine uses VVEL for throttle control. It vaires the amount it intake valve opens to control the amount of air flowing into each cylinder.

It does have a throttle body but it's just there incase the VVEL fails; it remains fully open at all times. If you're having throttle problems and have the 3.7L V6 then you should go to your dealer.

Awesome write up. I cleaned my TB at 24k miles and it wasnt as nearly as dirty as yours but still had some grease and stuff.

Took about 30 minutes.

Just an "update". Some one posted a video on YT of a G37 during start up showing the problem.

YouTube - G37 can't maintain rpm

I guess it happens on the VHR just as bad as the HR lol

It's because of the filters from the Injen intakes.
