In the first picture where you move the shift boot down, how do you get the metal ring that sits between the boot and the actual shift **** to move down. Mine seems to be held by something but wiggles. I don't want to break it

You slide the clip out toward the rear of the car. After you remove the clip your shift **** will come right off.

I understand that part, i'm talking about how you get to the clip. the boot doesn't just slide down.........something holds the boot against the shift ****. i want to know how you get the boot to slide down so that you can see the clip.

if your trying to get the boot down so the clip can be seen then you would have to pull the boot down. its really tight but with a little force the boot will
pop out and slide down. ill make a short clip of this diy project just really busy. please be a little patient.

12Fear, did you run accross anything in your investigations that looked like a shifter tie in for the paddle harness? I want to add paddle shifters but my car model did not come with that part of the harness in the steering column. I'm trying to find a clean way to add them.

12Fear - I got a message saying you posted the following:

"here is a wire diagram that could be usefull to you" , but when I link to it, I can't find it at the end of the thread. Would you mind either reposting or attaching to a PM?

Thanks

what exactly is this doing? you mean changing the manual shift mode so that pushing forward actualy upshifts instead of downshifting?

no thats the normal operation already, Im making it when your shifting down on DS mode it will upshift then pushing foward will downshift. It works great for me.

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but has anyone done this to the 7AT yet? I've checked the plugs & the colour/location of the wires are different on the 7AT than the 5AT. Couldn't find a service manual on the net for the sedan/coupe with 7AT to check the wiring diagram...

If someone has successfully done this on their 7AT which wires do you switch out?

Someone used to BMW's manual mode would probably be in favor of this mod.. Still pointless IMO I don't understand why it'd be cooler to move the shifter **** downwards to upshift. Besides wouldn't it be more logical to move the shifter ****

UPwards to UPshift and
DOWNwards to DOWNshift lol

Actually the idea for this mod came from BMW and Mazda, the only 2 companies that seem to get it right when it comes to this sort of automated shifting. Many automotive journalists seem to agree that pulling backward for upshifting feels more natural that pushing forward.

For me, it's the feeling of going with the sensation of being pushed back into my seat that makes pulling equate to upshifting. Likewise, as I brake it feels more natural to push forward to downshift as momentum is pushing me forward in a rapidly decellerating car.

BTW I have a 7AT and would LOVE to get a DIY on this mod as well as a way to reverse the "+" & "-" on my shift plate.

if u dont like the idea then dont do it to ur car. THis if for people who do like the idea. and plus it feels alot better to upshift pulling the lever down lol
