Chiped paint
Chiped paint
Hey guys, the other day i backed into another parked car lol no dents but three nice deep scratches. I took the paint of my car nothing huge but nice long pencil size marks. Its a white sedan so the paint is off and im left with black streeks from where the paint was. Any suggetions to fix that ?
First try using some compound and polish to see if you can remove them by buffing it out and just to clean it up a bit.
If that fails, if you can run your finger through the scratches and feel it, you pretty much would need to using the wetsanding technic. My front bumper has full of chipped paint. This i what i usually do:
1. I would buy some 2000 grit wetsand paper. You may need to go 1200 depending on your scratch. Have that soak in water for about 30 minutes.
2. I would wipe the area down with some isoproply alcohol 90% to remove the wax. Tape around the area with painter's tape to avoid removing other areas.
3. I would use a squirt bottle with a lil soap detergent and start sanding the area with the soak sandpaper while spraying it with soapy water. Try to keep that area wet. Sand a few times and spray it. Don't apply too much pressure.
4. Once you feel like it's smooth out, wipe it down with some microfiber cloth.
5. Use your touchup paint with a fine tipped brush and fill in the scratches. Apply around 3-4 coats every 15-30 minutes.
6. Leave it alone for about a 1 week.
7. Go back to the wetsanding technic over the painted area.
8. Buff the area with compound, polish, and then seal it with a wax or sealant.
9. It should look better after that. You won't see it from far away.
I know some people would use a syringe and fill in the paint depending on how deep it maybe.
Hope that helps. It's just how i've been making repairs myself.

Wet sanding and touching it up yourself is great but it takes a bit of skill. It is easy to make it worse if you're not good at it.
The only way to fully repair paint that is scratched all the way off is to repaint the entire panel. You can try touch up paint, but I can tell you before you do it that it will not match that well and you will be able to see it has been touched up. If that doesn't bother you and you want to save $200-$300 of repainting the whole bumper, go for it. Also even if you have it professionally repainted there will still be some degree of color difference that you can see on the white.

I've done wetstanding. It doesn't bother me too much. It comes out really nice. You can barely notice if i dont' point it out. I'll wait either for a new bumper or just get it repainted. NYC has crappy roads.
Any Autozone, Strauss Auto, etc. should sell the wetsand paper. Touchup paint comes from a nissan or infiniti parts department. Local infiniti or nissan dealer will carry them also. It's like around 10-12 dollars.
