Safe to degrease the VQ motor?
Hey all, the GTM supercharger kit is going on next week and I decided I wanted to degrease the motor to clean the bay up a bit (it needs it). I am petrified of getting water in the engine bay, so I'm taking it to a well known local detailer in the area. Are these motors okay to degrease and spray down? Are there any recommendations to alleviate possible complications? I have detailed the exterior a countless number of times, but never really gave the TLC the engine deserves.
Thanks!
Thanks!
I've done engine bay cleaning a number of times on a number of G's with no adverse effects. When you say "degrease" what are you using? What sort of shape is your engine bay in that it would be greasy?

When I say grease, I mean; dirt, salt (heavy winters), and grime. It's thick enough that you can't just wipe it off. I figured they would be using some type of chemical to break through the dirt and spray it off. I just wanted to make sure that the MAF sensors and the other harnesses wouldn't be affected negatively once water possibly hits them.
Don't spray the water directly on the MAF intentionally or into the alternator. But splashes won't hurt it. if it makes you feel better, tape some plastic over the MAF connections and put a plastic grocery bag over your alternator. I use this:

It works fantastic with minimal or no brushing. If you have tough areas that you need to brush, I use this one:

Hey Black Betty, will this also remove the oxidation that shows up on the front of the motor (the silver aluminum right behind the radiator overflow reservoir)?

That's one of the worst areas on the motor.

As a retired military guy, I sometimes go to the auto hobby shop on base and pay $3 to use the steam cleaner. Works like a charm.
I've used it on a number of cars and trucks and never had an issue with water or steam in the engine bay. Just don't spray cold water on a hot engine, obviously.
I also heard a friend say Honda Brite is good stuff.
