Help Best way to repair a paint chip?
Best way to repair a paint chip?
Hi Guys,
Last week I noticed a paint chip on the trunk door. I have no clue how in the hell it could have happened?
I want to have it repaired before any rust starts to form. I'm thinking of having a body shop repaint the spot and blend the color in.
Your comments/suggestions are very much appreciated!

Will do!
That is a strange area to get a chip.
You got nothing to lose by trying to touch it up yourself. If you don't like the results, then take it to a body shop.
I would think in order to look right they would have to paint the whole trunk lid and then you would have to hope that the new paint didn't fade and stand out a year or so later.
You could also put a double back tape, stick on metallic emblem with your initials/hobby/forum name/ etc. over it.

I would try to touch it up first with touch up paint. I had a rock chip on my front bumper and I picked up the infiniti black touch up paint to match, but I DID NOT use the brush that comes with the touch up paint. I had a complete set of paintbrushes around the house from when I did oil paintings years ago so I used the finest tipped paint brush to touch up.
If you dont have one, go to your local craft store and pick up the brushes which have a VERY VERY fine and small point on them (the size of a pen or pencil tip). I use these because you can control exactly how much paint you put on your car and with the fine tipped brushes and can go around the edges easier.
When I have used the supplied brush that comes with the touch up paint, it usually put too much paint on the car and smudged it and got it over existing paint.
I have found that when touching up paint if I ONLY fill in the area which has been chipped away, let it complete harden, then go over it with a light polish and then sealant, that I cant notice it at all unless I get really close and need to look at it.
Of course, size always matters. For small 1/4 inch and less rock chips, its easy to almost entirely get rid of them and its much cheaper than taking it to a body shop.
If your chip is under 1/2 inch or less, Id try to touch it up with paint and a very very fine tipped brush first.

Bought my 2010 G37 Journey Sedan brand new last week. They told me to bring the car back for detailing. After they were done, I noticed two chips on the front passenger door. I showed it to the sales guy and he said that I should bring it in again and have them "fix" it. After reading about some of these dealerships touching the cars and making them worse, I'm thinking twice about letting them "fix" it. I appreciate your opinions. Thanks.
