Cleaning OEM Rims

I clean the GEE every week including the rims. I use a brush and clothes to clean the rims and after everything dries I use Pinnacle Black Onyx Tire Gel on the tires. This week I noticed that parts of the rims, the part near the tires, have become discolored. They have like a brownish coating that has become hard. I can sratch some of it off but is is hard and not all of it comes off like that.

What can I use to get it off and to clean the rims better generally. Is there a polish for the rims? Is it coming from the tire gel?

I like the results of these two products, good stuff:

Following with this (a couple coats every few months) makes regular washing easy:

i use Meguiar's tire hot shine tire spray... it works pretty nice, but i might want to look into the gel i think it lasts a little longer but if you're going to wash it every week i wouldn't worry about it =)

Both of those products are designed for treated/untreated alloy wheels. The stock G37 wheels have painted finishes and should be cared for like painted surfaces, not treated/untreated surfaces.

Try some regular paint polish by hand, and some clay if that doesn't work. I would suggest sealing the wheels with Migliore: Wheel Seal in the future for easy of cleaning and protection. Click the link in my signature for more information.

Why would a painted and clear coated wheel need to be sealed?

Protection and depth. It's the same logic as waxing/sealing your car.

Actually, it is not obvious to me why I would use a bare metal sealant on a painted surface. I can understand a paint sealant on a painted surface. But, the wheel sealant he is recommending is for bare metal, not painted, surfaces. So, no, I still do not understand why I would use the wheel sealant on a painted wheel.

The wheel sealant I'm recommending isn't strictly for bare metal. Believe it or not, about 99% of all OEM wheels now are clear coated, so it's indifferent.

I am still confused. A paint sealant is very different than a metal sealant. I have never been told they are interchangeable. Also, a great many oem alloys are "diamond cut" (a procedure about 20 years old which dramatically reduces the cost of producing alloy wheels) and most manufacturers leave such diamond cut alloys "bare" (again, because of the cost savings).

Is your wheel sealant a sort of "one size fits all"? Will it also work on the body's paint?

Why not just use a paint sealant on G wheels?
