Hello every one! I test drove the G37 a few times in the past two weeks and really enjoyed it. I drove the 6mt twice and my second time, (today) I did a lot better especially with my limited stick experience. My two friends came along today and they both complained that they didn't like the clutch since it was too light and thus hard to engage correctly. I struggled with it and while the clutch in my friends Mini was noticeably easier, I didn't think the G37's clutch was horrible. To me it seemed like something that one would get used to with practice. My one friend seemed to be doing fine, while the other I could see was having more trouble. I did notice that it was sometimes hard to get the gear selector into gear. I really like the G37 because it seems like you could have some fun with it (I really felt it was fun to drive), yet it still has luxury features (leather, seat heaters, etc) for the drive home after a long day at work/school. I especially like the navigation system as the aftermarket one I currently have can sometimes be a pain.

My friends persuaded me to look at the BMW 335i/135i, but i'm just not interested even though the 335i coupe felt more sportier and I think the 135i would be a blast. Today, we looked at a VW GTI and even though I don't think they really compare, it was a blast to drive because of the turbo. With a bit of money it could certainly be a fun car. I'm involved in the euro car community so it would be nice to "stay in the family" (plus a member from the local euro car club works at the VW dealer), but that isn't a priority for me.

I currently own a '04 Audi A4 and i'm looking for something that has similar amenities, but will allow me to drive spirited when necessary. I took my A4 to the track and had a lot of fun with it and I plan to return with whatever car I choose next.

What do you all think? I think i'm sold on the G37, but i'm just afraid i'll be unhappy with the clutch. I also noticed the headroom was kind of lacking, but again I think that is something to get used to. I'm just indecisive sometimes and just wanted to get my thoughts out and maybe get some feedback. Thanks for sticking with me .

Ah f it, buy the 6mt. I learned the day I bought my 6mt. You get used to it really quick, and buying a car like this wouldn't be worth it if it were the AT.

 

Thanks! I don't get why they thought it was so bad, I see what they are saying, but it just seems like you would get used to it. I'm trying to get a car where I don't really have to mod it (bad experience with my Audi, a supercharger, and my engine ) and I can just enjoy it. Part of me wants to get the VW GTI just because I can go mod crazy. Though I think the G37 is more unique.

 

Its an Audi! Same thing happend to my A4 when I chipped it, cracked my turbo, you name it! Have had a G35, put 80k miles on it, not even a dead battery and no problems so far in the G37. IMO, stay from VW.

 

No VW, at the end of the day it's still a VW.
I say get the 6mt. If you have to go through a clutch once in your life to learn how to drive like a man then it's a small price to pay. My best advice for you being new at MT is not go crazy with trying to race people. Get used to driving stick first before going fancy. I've only been doing it for about 6 weeks and am getting more and more proficient with each day.

 

Hey I love my 5AT buddy.

 

Well, I do disagree about the AT not being worth it. Paddle down one of two gears floor it and you can actually force a sneeze back up the nose.

And I think we can all agree that those huge rotors can bring the sneeze right back out!

So, on the clutch thing there will likely be aftermarket clutch options if it really end up being an issue.

btw - I actually thought the interior/dash on the BMWs are looking kind of stale. Not much different than my 2001 330i.

The bmw will make a better track car right from the gitgo so if that is really important then...

If given enough time you can get used to any clutch. I don't think any 6MTers have complained about the clutch/tranny in the G. The think the only issue I can remember is it being "herky jerky" in stop and go traffic. Meaning it might be tough to slowly let out the clutch without slipping it.

The 5AT is a beauty, too. You can't go wrong with it.

 

Sorry about the AT comments guys. For me, I regret getting a AT in the 07 Mustang GT just cause I feel like I should be doing more to enjoy the machine I plunked down hard earned money for.

 

There is nothing wrong with that. However, as far as I know, the '07 stang does not have a paddle shifting, rev-matching downshift 5pd. That puts a little more of the fun back in it.

 

The AT in the G, is way better than a mustang's AT. Either way, a stick can be fun. I drove one for three years. The G is only my second AT car... no regrets at all.
