Summer hi perf tires in winter
Summer hi perf tires in winter
I have a G37S WITH Michelin Pilot super sport tires, max performance summer tires.
It has been raining for forever in East TN. The car has not left the garage for a while. This week is supposed to be sunny with highs in the mid 30's to 40 degrees. But it will be in the low 20's in the morning when I drive to work. The roads will be dry and clear. I'm dying to drive the coupe after all this time. OK to drive the car the 19 miles to work in the low 20's temperatures?
Any feedback greatly appreciated.

What bPChaos just said.
Summer-only tires are superb in the rain (assuming there's tread). However, once the temps get near or below freezing, they won't have any traction on dry pavement. And as important as that is, another consideration is that you'll damage the tires when they're that hard. PSS are expensive tires, be a shame to mess them up.
Do what you have to do, but keep the speeds low and double your stopping distance. Or better yet, just don't do it. Not worth the risk.

Rats, so I do need to heed the warnings, wasn't sure if what I was seeing concerning summer hi-perf tires might be over kill, apparently not. The car will stay in the garage, it's not my daily driver. It's East Tennessee, it can't stay cold very long.
Thanks for the information.
