Help Coilovers and Preload?
Coilovers and Preload?
Hey guys I got BCs on my sedan and this season I was slammed and I was bottoming out quite frequently just under the oil pan even with maxed out dampening. Can I just increase the preload of the coils to make it harder and compress less or would I have to get new harder springs?? I don't really want to deal with getting new springs.

Check to seee if they are blown .if not.buy new springs.with a higher k.but you can onlu go up one or two numbers without having the coilover revalved.goodluck.so if they are 8k go up to 10k.makes it stiffer
The coilovers are almost brand new only like 5k miles on them. So preloading more isn't going to do anything then? Mine are already 10k/8k. My thinking was that compressing the spring more would make it stiffer?
Those shocks are designed to work at full travel, if you shorten the travel w/ more preload it will shorten the damper life, similar to running lowering springs on OEM dampers. I'd try to just get the height you want to work for your daily driving and then adjust your dampers. I have Megan LPs which are essentially the same as BCs and have my height set to zero fender gap and run just a bit over halfway up on the damper ****, been great for over 3 years now. And this is w/ 1/4" preload F&R. Same spring rates too.

Ahh, yeah, the AWD w/ it's heavier front and less ground clearance would be more "slam-prone", thought you had a RWD. Just checked my spring specs, they're 12k front/10k rear. Might contact BC and see if a spring rate increase will get you to a better place, also Swift makes many coilover spring sets.

Is getting 12k springs going to make a difference though? I have like 1.5 inches of clearance under the front so I don't know. I did send them an email so we'll see what they say. But if they tell me to get stiffer springs, I will need to re-valve,etc and it will cost half the price of the coils then I will have to live with it I guess. Low car problems lol...
