Eibach/Tokico - harsh ride
Eibach/Tokico - harsh ride
I have a 2009 G37 Journey Sedan. Decided to do a complete suspension upgrade. I seemed to have picked the wrong setup for what I wanted.
I installed an Eibach Pro-Plus kit (springs and sways) plus Tokico HP (blue) shocks. The sways are set at SOFT in the front and MEDIUM in the rear.
This thing now "bounces" waay too much over bumps. I really harshened up the ride more than I wanted for a DD.
I'm no suspension expert but I'm guessing the springs are the issue.
Should I consider different springs like Swift? Go to the softest setting on the front sway too?
Please share your thoughts/input please. Thank you kindly.

Maybe Soundmike will chime in, he's been full circle w/ coilovers not being as compliant (comfortable) as he was wanting, tried swift springs w/ his BC coils and ended up w/ other issues. He's now riding Swifts lowering springs w/ aftermarket Strut/shocks (not Tokico HPs though). He seems to be pretty happy w/ the current setup.
FWIW I was on B&G springs (similar to the deeper H&R drop) and got tired of the jarring ride (and also the inherent dangers of being that low) so I went w/ Megan Street Series coilovers and am much happier driving my G now, a much more compliant ride and getting the exact height I wanted was another huge plus. Got about 10kmiles on them and no regrets.

Issue is sways. The springs are fine.
The front sway bar only has two settings soft and hard.
Next set your front sway to full stuff! Do this put your rear on middle hole and front at soft. This will smooth out your ride! Because the bar is set to stiff your are not letting your shocks do the work of keeping the car smooth.
The Eibach springs are smoother then OEM! But remember Eibach design there springs rates to work with OEM shocks.

Sorry guys, my bad. I meant that my sways are set to SOFT in the front and MEDIUM in the rear.
Yes GTLAW, that is how I am supposedly setup. Maybe I should go to soft in the rear as well. Perhaps I should have stayed with the stock shocks?
Hmmm.

Is it bouncy or bumpy? There's a fine line between those two, and i've noticed folks interchange those terms when it comes to describing rides.
I think a combination of what you did is what's making the ride harsher. Although some reviews of aftermarket suspensions have you believe that the ride is more comfortable, etc. It is very subjective and what's comfortable to one is stiff to another. I find stiff but compliant rides to be more comfortable than the OEM's tendency to float.
That said, if you're used to the float of the OEM suspension, there is no (AFAIK) aftermarket suspension that can match that type of ride. All of them are designed to ride firmer or stiffer than OEM.
That said, i'm particularly interested in your comment about bounce over bumps. If it is what i think you're describing, then it could be the sway bars. Even at full soft, it's still significantly stiffer than OEM. Try going back to OEM on those and see if you like the ride better without it.
I'm at full soft for the sways myself. I find it handles great, but still not compliant over bumps especially at mid-turn. So much so i plan on going back to OEM for the sways when the opportunity presents itself.
Stiff sways are great if you're on smooth roads, but any roughness on one side will take the other side with it as the sways act to reduce the independent nature of the suspension. It's a big part of why people dislike solid rear beam suspensions.

Truly appreciate the input. It's definitely the "bouncy" I'm feeling bothered by...not the bumpy. For example, going in a straight line over patchy/sectional pavement on certain roads, over many bridges and over many ripples in the road; I'm bouncing up and down in the seat. I feel like I'm having to brace myself and hold my breath (otherwise its often uncomfortable).
For the record, I drive a lowered Z06 vette - so I know that after market suspension certainly doesn't make things more compliant (or ride remotely like OEM).
I wanted something closer to (or just a bit more aggressive than) the G37S suspension feel. I obviously went a bit far with my G37 daily driver and I want to reel it back a little bit.
I will try the sways first I guess.
It's the rebound and compression rate of your Tokicos. I experience the same thing with my Koni/Vogtland set up on my BMW. Bounces over bumps. I don't know about Tokico's but with Koni's only the rebound setting is adjustable. Even on full soft, the shock rebound is much stiffer than I prefer. I would just like it a little bit softer and I feel that would solve my problem but I can't adjust it any softer. The stiffer I set it, the harsher the ride becomes. I can't seem to dial it in to my liking so...I just live with it. Word of advice, sell your shock/spring set up and go with a coilover like Tanabe. Very very comfortable. Rides smooth over bumps and is much better at maintaining composure over OEM setup.
