So, I am looking at winter tires and trying to decide which set is better. The choices are the Bridgestone Blizzak LM-60 (Performance Winter/Snow) vs. Michelin X-Ice Xi2 (Studless Ice & Snow).



Does anyone have experience with either of these tires and which ones are the best.

 

have you tried the pilot alpins. these things rock on our cars. I had the blizzacks and took them off last winter with only one winter on them then put a knife through the side wall and through them out. they suck compaied to the michelins. I am currently running the XI2's on my FX50S in the winter and they do very well. This is a canadian winter and the wife drives both the G and FX in the winter 300km each day to work round trip. She hated the blizzacks to the point where she stopped dring the G lastwinter. time to put the pilots back on this winter.

have the lm60's on my stock 19's and ran them last winter. Being that philly had a crazy winter last year, I can say they grip pretty well. wear out pretty fast though.

 

I have Dunlop Winter Sport M3's. theyre meh.

 

Got the yokohama observe garit kx from dealership. Testing them out this winter. Did a bit of research and they're suppose to be one of the best performance winter tires. Not bad priced too compared to LM-60 and blizzak alpin PA3

The LM's will do best in moderate to low snow climates where you see more plowed roads than anything. Downtown Chicago, short commutes, etc. Trade harsher condition traction for better clear day handling.

The X-Ice is best used in harsher conditions where you'll see more accumulation and packed snow/ice. Trade handling for better poor weather traction.

Personally, I buy snows to make sure I can get home if need be. I'm willing to sacrifice some handling if it means I can make it when the snow really comes down.

 

I've heard some good things about the General Altimax Arctic tires. Does anyone have any experience with these?

The roads of my commute are mostly plowed, except for the roads in my subdivision. Those are usually the last ones to get cleared, plus there's a sizable hill I have go get over to get to my street. I'll sacrifice some performance for more grip in the snow.

Bridgestone's WS70 just came out. Those are suppose to be better than the X-ice XI2 from what my tire technician said... And they're cheaper!

I ran the Hankook W409's for a couple of winters on an Accord V-6 and thought they were okay. Good traction and wear with a somewhat stiffer sidewall than Haka Q's I ran on a previous Accord. I am not convinced the traction was better than the Haka's, particularly on ice. I put the General Altimax Arctics (225/55-17) on my G37xS (dedicated winter rims) last October. I would rate the traction and handling superior to either the Haka or the W409. I will, however, concede that our G's wonderful AWD system (when so equipped) makes hooning around in the snow and ice a delight on just about any tires as long as they have air in 'em!
