Anti-lock braking sounds terrible

This week we got some snow, and I took my G sedan out in it the other morning. For the first time since buying it last summer, I felt and heard the anti-lock braking mechanism working.

WOW, it sounds horrible. Like an awful grinding and crunching of gears. It's not supposed to sound like that, is it? I've driven other cars with ABS before, and they did not sound like that.

In 8 years of owning it, I've never heard mine make any sound that I could hear.

Sounds like I'd better check it out then. Thanks.

You should feel a pulsation of sorts in the pedal.

I drove mine home last night after work and the traction control kicked in quite a few times at 15mph and but it sounds and feels like the brake pads are going all rapid fire on the rotors (because they are). I didn't hear any grinding at all. That kind of sounds like your brake pads are gone and you're going metal on metal. I'd get it checked out if I were you!

Every car i have driven makes ABS noise, especially in the snow. And yes it's not a very reassuring noise... but it's normal.

Same, I don't think any of my cars haven't made some nasty noises with ABS going.

If my brake pads were that far gone, wouldn't I hear it during regular use? If nothing else, a squealing when breaking? I don't hear this at all, the brakes seem to work fine. I only heard the grinding sound when I was sliding on slushy snow and the ABS was working (the brake pedal was vibrating under my foot as it happened).

I'll report back on what I find out... if it's normal, great, but it sure makes me wince to hear it. Thanks for the input.

The sound your hear when the ABS is working is louder compared to other cars.
So.... don't worry and make sure you don't lift your foot when you hear that "ugly" sound.

Thats normal. You are supposed to hear it and feel it under the brake pedal.
