Car Rear Ended: Muffler/Exhaust Question??
Car Rear Ended: Muffler/Exhaust Question??
Happy New Years All !!
So I was rear ended on my 2010 Sedan G37 (Black). I am doing fine, thanks
I took my car to Nissan Collision by my house. They are estimating $5k plus for repairs. I was able to use my collision coverage to claim.
Question: They informed me that my mufflers/exhausts (2) will need to be replaced. Are they able to just replace the mufflers/exhausts only or do they will need to replace the whole pipe going to the middle of the car? I hear it is all 1 piece unless they are looking to cut the existing mufflers/exhausts & wielding the new mufflers/exhaust in? Thanks in advance.
NOTE: Didn't realize none of Infiniti dealership has a Collision shop or department. All they do is refer you to a specialize collision shop..eg: Service King, etc.

The exhaust on sedans consists of 3 parts.
From the cat back as follows:
2into1 Y pipe
1into2 mid pipe (contains resonators)
Each end of the mid pipe feed a muffler

The above pic is of an assembled stock exhaust on a g37 sedan. Depending what got damaged, they can replace the muffler only if need be.

If you got rear ended, your insurance shouldn't be paying anything. The insurance company of the driver who rear ended you should be paying. What the hell?
Also, there are lots of great independent shops in Houston that can do better work than the dealership body shop. Let me know if you'd like a recommendation for one.

^^If a claim is put through one's own insurance company (assuming collision coverage is present), don't they pay the claim then go through a subrugation process to recover their payout.
They can. But why would you do that rather than make the at fault party's policy pay from the start? In the collision coverage shouldn't cover this, uninsured motorist coverage should. Unless I'm not understanding something relevant.

They had me drive to this hole in the wall repair shop for the assessment. This shop more closely resembled a chopshop than repair. Their hourly rate was half the typical going rate.
It still took weeks to get a check from them. Had to hound the adjuster daily to finally get paid.
In retrospect I should of just put the claim through my own company and let them collect through their process.
An insurance company cannot force you to take your car anywhere. The choice is always yours. People let themselves be bullied because they don't know any better or know how to deal with them.
Karen that I mentioned above has done this for a living for a very long time and knows how to get results from insurance companies better than anyone I've ever met. She will get them to pay for the car to be repaired correctly. With OEM parts.

I actually ended up sourcing the parts on CL, having a local shop paint it, then doing the install myself. The damage was under $1K.
I may have shared this story before. The driver of the car was arrested earlier in the night for dui. Someone posted bail on their behalf and they went back to recover the car. Apparently either the driver was drunk or pissed but he lost control on our street, striking 2 other vehicles then clipping the bumper on my car in the driveway. His car came to rest against a tree adjacent to the driveway. Had the tree not been there the car would of plowed through our living room.
Anyhow, the driver then fled, leaving his car on our property. One of the officers that came out recognized the vehicle from the earlier dui arrest and knew exactly who it belonged to.

Thanks in advance.

so it looks like it is piece by piece & not all 1 piece as stated earlier in the post & picture provided. estimate came out to be a little over $10k. Wow!!

As I mentioned earlier, the exhaust consists primarily of those main pieces. If you were to source them from a third party it wouldn't be piecemeal like that. If you were to put together a full exhaust from a nissan parts catalog I bet there'd be at least 30-40 pieces.
Look to see what they're charging your insurance for the exhaust. Might be an option to go with full catback aftermarket exhaust if their price tag is $900 or more. Ignore this if you're happy with the stock exhaust.
Post some pics of the damage.
P.s. Too bad you're in TX. I have a full stock catback exhaust with ~4K miles for a sedan I'd love to get rid of.
