Modifying Akebono calipers...

I just recieved my beautiful calipers from sending them to Mike the powdercoater..

Unfortunately.. they didn't fit under my 22" wheels.. I actually test fitted and it scratched a tiny bit of the powdercoat off..

I just picked up some 5mm spacers.. which should clear fine.. but I would rather modify the caliper itself by milling some off .. it just barely didn't fit.

To those who have milled some aluminum off the akebono.. How much do you feel that you can safely mill off the front caliper edge/face?

its just the ridge that touched..

Yea yea.. I know I should've did the whole template thing first.. It slipped my mind.. I guess I shouldn't have taken a chance like that..

Anyone have any tips?

I would like to run the spacers temporarily.. until I have some time to send the front calipers back out to mike after milling what I need off.. because my wheels are already flush right to the edge of the fender.. I dont really want it sticking out another 5mm..

Thanks for any help!

Damn, that's a shame, nice setup BTW. Here's a thread on a Corvette forum about very thin spacers, like 2mm. Might be enough to give you relief w/out causing too much poke, sounds like that one poster in the thread makes custom spacers. Good luck.

That may be an option.. but i'd like to get away with just milling the caliper anyway..

Especially since I damaged one already.. it was so pretty too

The 5mm spacer.. gave me about 3mm of clearance from caliper... I just picked up some hubcentric spacers 5mm that are machined 6061 aluminum (the ones I had were cheapie cast spacers.. just to get idea what I need..

anyone know how much I can mill?

I talked to Coz.. he said there should be plenty of meat there.. I talked to Mike the powdercoater and he said on the flat portion.. there good meat on flat surface but very thin near cylinder/piston bores.

My wheels are like perfectly flush with the fender with my 22x9 +38.. Even running a 2mm spacer bothers me lol.. (Plus I HATE spacers.. its like the half assed way of doing things IMO)

The Drop is perrrfect

Damn that's a hot M you've got going
If they would be able to mill some off and still be able to retain the glass finish I suppose that's an option but I'd be really worried that the milled portion would look well, milled

I don't understand why you are willing to compromise on the quality/rigidity of the calipers instead of doing something simple like a spacer. From your pictures I see you still have a couple mm of space and might be able to fit a 10mm spacer and be done with the problem. If you don't like spacer maybe you should have the manufacturer you bought those from get you the right set.

Nope..

The wheels stick out 5mm with the 5mm spacer.. they are super close when I turn the wheel.

I bought the wheels first... why would I sell my wheels to buy new wheels just to clear a few mm of caliper clearance? That doesn't make sense TO ME.

Its a common practice to mill/shave these calipers down .. I just wasn't sure how much. Spacers add problems as well.. however; Yea 5mm.. it wont put much more stress on bearings or hubs... but still kind of a bandaid half *** fix.

I would make them look nice.. I would smooth them all out and have no transistions .. then send them back to Mike so he can redo his magic

Good luck w/ whatever route you choose, I'm sure the powdercoating would gloss over any minor milled finish, just haven't seen it done before.
Update this thread when you get it resolved.

Thanks man!

Will do! I hope I can get them to not be a problem..

If at all.. I amy just do as the other member suggested and mill off a small area of caliper and then run a 2mm spacer.. just so i'm keep the wheel edge away from fender as much as possible ..

To KontzTT.....did you have any issues with vibration after putting on the big brake kit? I have AP RACING just installed on my 2013 IPL and there's vibration between 60-70mph but no vibration really below or above that speed.
