Front End Metallic Sound

Hi All
I am getting a slight rubbing noise from my front end, esp. when coasting. Sometimes very hard to notice and other times fairly easy. Cannot hear when hit throttle even a little bit. It is a metallic sound.

I have new (month old) slotted/drilled rotors and pads on front. Rears need changed but noise is out front. Tires recently factory balanced and are about 1 year old.

Any thoughts or tests I can perform?

Did you properly bed them in?

Don't worry, I just learned about this myself. Here's a link below from StopTech regarding brake bed in process. Not sure if that's the cause of your noise though.

More info needed. Does the sound vary with engine, or vehicle speed? Reaction to bumps? Any other trigger events?

Does not seem to be influenced by much else such as speed or turns or bumps.

I hate to keep going to dealer for them to nickel and dime me......originally I had a bit of vibration on steering wheel and they rebalanced. NOw that is better (not perfect) but the brake noise remains. And since I installed my own rotors and shoes, they said 'if we would have installed...'. They are a simple install - a rotor and pad and self adjust right?

So it sounds like you're pretty sure it's from the brakes- why? Is the sound actually coming from that area? If it were brake related, I would expect the sound to increased in frequency as you go faster.

Are the brakes acting funny at all? Dragging? Mushy pedal? Anything else that can help us point you in the right direction? Still, not a lot of info to go with here. Happy to help if you can be more descriptive.

cheers

PS, what pads are you running? Did you reinstall the stock pad shims? Did you clean the calipers while you were replacing the pads?

Not sure if its applicable to your problem but when I go bumps I hear metal to metal contact. Was told it was the heat shield. Just something to look at.

If when you did your brakes if you bent the heat shield even just a tiny bit it will do this. Not all the time but bumps, turning etc etc. I had this happen on my Z when I did my rotors, bent it back out just a hair and it went away. I knew what it was when I heard it as this has happened to me on other vehicles.

Hmmm...my stepson put them on - not sure where the heat shield is but that could be something to look at.

I purchased PowerStop kit (front only). Had local mechanic put the rotors on and he said the old pads had a lot of life left so I left them on. So after a few weeks I noticed the sound and then had the new pads put on - maybe slightly worse but nor significant.

The dust/heat shield is directly behind the rotors with pretty close clearances. Not a bad idea to check. But if it was brake related if expect the sound to increase with vehicle speed.

At this point it could be anything (including bearings). I think you should get a quick diagnostic from a decent mechanic. Doesn't have to be a dealer.

New information to throw out there.....was just at dealer a couple days ago about the noise and they replaced front passenger wheel bearing/hub assembly. This did NOT fix the problem.

One thing I noticed....if I shift into Neutral, the noise disappears....

Thoughts??
