I recently brought my G37 in for service. Among my complaints was that the lighted kickplate on the driver's side was burnt out.

I have an Infiniti extended warranty but was told this isn't covered and was quoted more than $600 to replace it.

I'm annoyed because I read through the exclusions of the warranty line by line and saw no reason this item should be automatically excluded, which it apparently is. Apparently, this has been an issue for other customers in the past.

The service manager thought that maybe it was because this piece is subject to corrosion, which is specifically not covered. It seemed odd to me that a sealed unit would be susceptible to corrosion.

I'm considering contacting Infiniti directly since they administer the policy, but I am wondering if the service manager's reasoning is credible.

Most "optional accessories" are not covered under a vehicles warranty- original or extended. You might have some leverage if you bought the car brand new and the illuminated kickplates were preinstalled at the time of delivery. I would not count on Infiniti corporate to do a damn thing for you- they ignore the more serious dashboard issue and the engine oil gasket- but you can always try; sometimes the squeaky wheel does get the grease.

That said, LED's, like regular bulbs, give out. If, in the end, nobody helps, you can always find a new set of kickplates on eBay for anywhere from $125-200 and replace them yourself. It wouldn't take more than 15 minutes or so.
