For the past couple of years my shifter has started sounding like a rattlesnake in cold weather (3800 rpms or above). This only happens when the car is in gear.
Try this: with engine off and the shifter in neutral, shake the shifter back and forth (side to side) firmly and quickly. Do you hear any rattles? There is a small screw inside the shifter that attaches the metal shifter "mohawk" to the shift ****, maybe it is loose?
Does the noise happen when engine load is light (1/4 throttle) and RPM above 3800?
Does it happen in all gears, including reverse?
