G37 dashboard control Buttons paint peeling off

Hey guys! I am totally new here, although I have had my G37 since 2008. I just recently finished paying it off (yeah!), so now without the hefty monthly payment, I have turned my eyes into beautifying it. My warranty ran out a while back, so my questions are about how to get these fixed on my own.

Basically... The paint on some of my buttons is peeling off, in some you can't see the letters anymore (as in, there is no paint, just the white bare button).

Is there any way to fix these? I have tried looking on google, online, and everywhere and cannot find any concrete answer. Also tried to search the forums here before posting, but had no luck.

I have attached some pictures of the problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thank you very much guys.

Aelemar have you looked in the audio/video private classifieds? A member has a complete nav unit with all of the controls. If not keep your eyes peeled in the classifieds. Always good stuff there.

I looked at this company, but they don't have anything for Infiniti's. Check out their instructional video, and hopefully it will get you on the right track.

Me personally I'd just check the forum classifieds or even eBay, find a decent replacement, and swap them out. There are usually good, inexpensive parts out there. Simple to replace.

If you have a ton of meticulous skills you could try the process/product outlined in the video. I don't have the patience for anything like that nor the time. Me and hobby/x-acto knives never get along.

Good luck whichever way you go!

Even perhaps try salvage yards in your area.

Did you use any solvents or cleaning fluids on the buttons? That looks bad. I just assumed they used black plastic buttons...but as others suggested, the only way to fix is to replace.

Thank you so much for all your replies. I had seen the video quote above (thank you!) but they don't seem to have anything for Infiniti.

As for solvents or cleaners, not at all. I usually just use water or water and a bit of soap, and well... I'd be concerned about the quality of these buttons if mere soap could do this (not that I'm not concerned now, considering how bad they've gotten).

I might try a few local junkyards, although finding an Infiniti in a junk yard is a hell of a long shot (yeah, our Infinitis rock).

I have been considering finding some nice gloss paint that sticks well to plastic, clean up the buttons, give them a coat or two of this black paint, then make a model with the letters (a piece of paper with the letters as holes in them basically) and then place it over the buttons and paint it with similar, white paint.

If I find the right paint for the job, and that looks nice, it might give me the fix I need.

I would need to figure out which font Infiniti uses on their buttons though... Any of you have any ideas?

I just did a quick check on eBay and found a non-NAV switch assembly for $35 and a NAV switch assembly for $100 (or best offer). There are others in similar price ranges.

There are also some radio switch assemblies- some with the entire panel- for around $75 on up. Just be wary of anything listed as '07-'08 as they might have that hideous orange backlighting.

Just search "G37 switch OEM" and filter for used items.

I would have expected the paint to chip off...I am seeing a bubbling effect. Is that because of the elasticity of the paint?

Hey Guys! thanks you so much for all your answers so far. I will definitely look it up on ebay and see what I find there.
I had no idea what was the name for the assembly, lol. I always searched for "buttons" and such.
Thanks!
