Took me some time to find this lol. I just want to say you did an awesome job on your G!!

I ordered myself a porter cable and received it this morning. I'm about to tackle the horrible swirled paint on my FX this weekend.

 

Best of luck. Practice on something else first until you get the hang of it if possible. When you're really good with the PC, move up to the big leagues and get a Flex. The difference is unbelievable.

 

Wow great job! Love those 50/50 shots =D The before picture of the trunk with that long scratch looked nasty!

 

I'm pretty sure a "detail" shop I took it to once dropped something on it to make that horrible scratch. It was pretty deep. Since I've gotten more skilled from experience, I was able to get it out completely. That "before" condition is what can happen to you from only a few dealership and washes and taking it to a "professional" who thinks a bucket of dirty water, a bottle of armor all, and a terry cloth towel makes him a detailer.

The lesson of the story for everyone: Take your car to a real professional detailer and stop complaining about how much it costs. Or simply spend a good amount of money to buy the right gear and spend many hours practicing and learning. Or if you're in Houston, bring it to me.

how long does this last? my before scratches arent as bad but i want to do this to clean it up. I just want to know how long it will last

This seems like forever ago. I can't believe that I ever let my car get like that. I'm so glad that in the past several years I have been able to learn so much and get infinitely better and more skilled at detailing than I was back then.

 

Car looked great in the before and after. I have a question for you BB - I recently purchased a G37 that, well, needs some love on the outside. It probably hasn't been waxed in a year + with a lot of rides through an Autowash. So there are scratches from nose to trunk and there and some rubs and 'scuffs' in the clear coat.

I'm debating on whether I should have the car just wet sanded and polished. Or do you think a good clay bar and polish by a professional would, address my issues? So basically, how bad does it have to be to consider a wet sand compared to a clay bar. Obviously cost difference so I'm curious your thoughts with your experience!

Also, wanted to add the car is PG.

Clay bar will not fix your swirls and scratches at all. It's just remove tiny surface contaminants and make the paint smoother, not shinier or more scratch free. Claying helps your car to shine by making the surface look better and letting the maximum shine come through when it is polished. You probably need to clay the paint if it is in bad shape. But you may find that a good professional compound or polish can work wonders without wet sanding. Or you may only need to wet sand the worst problem areas and just polish the rest. I'd get a talented pro to polish it first before going to the wet sanding. I've been able to get cars back into much better shape than I thought I could just by doing a 2 or 3 stage polish.
