Side mirror, back-up camera and touch screen working sporadically
Hello all,
08 Skyline 370GT 6MT -
Im having issues with my backup camera, Side mirror camera and infotainment touch screen. The cameras do not show any image when selected sometimes. I get a black image showing the "check your surroundings" message, but no feed. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. Its hard to replicate. Usually everything works when I drive over 10 to 15 minutes or longer.
The touch screen also doesnt work all the time. Same story, sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. I can't pinpoint why. Any ideas? I have the NiftyCity piggyback android auto installed. Car is parked inside so temp couldnt be the culprit.
Thanks in advance!

It will be a little difficult for most of us to help you diagnose your issues due to the fact that your car is RHD (right hand drive). Being your car is either EU/Asia or JDM-spec, the wiring for these cars CAN be slightly different among certain systems and, to my knowledge, wiring diagrams for RHD cars are hard to find (at least I never found them).
I know certain RHD cars came with wing cameras (side mirror) but reading you other posts you indicated you were going to install aftermarket cameras from AliExpress to be used with this "NiftyCity" thing. Are you using the OEM cameras or the Ali's?
Being that you are having issues with both camera feeds AND the center display, I suspect there is a issue with either the OEM headunit or perhaps this "Nifty" thing you have installed. Did you do this install yourself? If so, you may want to check your connections and make sure nothing worked loose. Rare, but it happens... If possible, can you remove the "NiftyCity" components and see if the problem recurs, or persists?
Again, hard to diagnose with limited info (both OEM and aftermarket).

Hello,
Thank you kindly for your response -
It is indeed a RHD JDM-Spec vehicle, I am aware that it is a culprit to find manuals etc for specific purposes, but thought perhaps somebody knew where to look better than me. Ive got the car for less than half a year, so still learning the ins and outs. To answer your questions short and effective:
- Only issues with side mirror cam and reverse cam - they both show the warning to check surroundings but dont show the feed. I can still toggle them on/off on the center display. When it does work after a drive, it works fine, i can switch between them and the lines to do reverse parking move along with the steering wheel.
Touch screen seems to be unresponsive to the touch sometimes. Starts working after a bit of driving too. It does though, always work with the dial/buttons, although when using navigation, entering an address is quite annoying with the dial.
- Audio works fine, Navigation as well, all the other electronics work just fine, A/C, Heater, windows, etc.
- I installed it myself indeed, it is a small computer that connects between the headunit and the display unit and allows for use of AndroidAuto on the main display. Cables are not changed though, the Niftycity module simply plugs in between the two systems.
- Will remove the system again this week and see if the problem persists.
Appreciate your help!
Kind regards,
K

So, to clarify, you are using the OEM wing and rear cameras- that came with the car?
I would remove the "Nifty" module and see how the cameras/ touchscreen behave. If the issue persists, then I would lean toward the main headunit. These headhunts are getting old (15 years and counting) and the hard drives do not last forever... though given the intermittent issue, I still suspect it is your add-on module.
Are you familiar with the AV Diagnostic function (AV Diagnostic Menu)? You could check for any AV-specific error codes, connection error, etc. You can also download the AV Section of the USDM Factory Manual for your 2008 from here to get more info on the diagnostic menus. I would imagine the diagnostic functions would also be baked into the JDM-unit... might be useless if the menus are in Japanese, though (unless you are fluent in Japanese ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )...
BE WARNED...IF YOU DO ACCESS THE DIAGNOSTIC FUNCTIONS, DO NOT RESET ANYTHING!!! JUST KEEP PRESSING THE 'BACK' BUTTON TO EXIT THE DIAGNOSTICS OR TURN THE CAR COMPLETELY OFF. AGAIN, DO NOT SELECT ANY RESET OPTION!!! Any reset will render the AV system useless and you will need a dealer to reconfigure the system- which may be difficult given your location.

Hi there,
Yes, the cameras and headunit are OEM other than the Nifty module. Im not familiar with the AV menu but with your manual and some googling i should be able to figure it out. I also have an app that can translate Japanese to English by simply using my phones camera so thats not a problem.
So what you are saying is, check the AV - menu for error codes and if there is nothing, just back out of it, dont touch anything?
Appreciate your help!
Kind regards,
K

The diagnostic functions will test all of the AV system components. You can check for fault codes as well as connection errors/history. However, within the menus there is a option to "INITIALIZE SETTINGS." Stay away from that selection. When you are done, just keep pressing the 'BACK' button or shut the car off.
Good luck!
