Has anyone used iPad mini as GPS through usb connector?

I have a 2010 G37 Journey with premium no-nav. That being the case, I've been trying to find ways to route Google Maps to my speaker system. Then I came up with the idea that maybe I can plug in an iPad mini into the usb dock in the car and access the music that way and hopefully have the GPS instructions come through as well? Has anyone ever tried this?

And if you have, I've been doing some research, which leads to more questions. The usb dock in our car only outputs 2.5W of power, while the included charger in the ipad mini is a 5W charger (10W or 12W with the ipad mini retina). Is the 2.5W of power enough to continuously run an iPad that's also running GPS?

If that doesn't work, my 2nd plan was to buy a used iPhone and use it as an iPod. Can someone confirm whether or not GPS instructions would come through the USB dock if you were to do that? I wouldn't connect it via bluetooth since I'd like to connect my regular phone to it. Thanks!
