Apple TV install DIY

Apple TV install DIY

1. The first thing you'll need is an Apple TV with the remote and power cable. You may be a bit limited where you choose to install it, but I chose on top of the dash as it seemed the most aesthetically logical place, as well as requiring only a small amount of modification. Other places to consider are the centre console ashtray and the map light sunglass holder. Wherever you decide to install it, the front of the Apple TV will need to be exposed for the remote signal to connect. One possible worry about the location I chose is possible overheating. I will have to take precautions in the summer.

2. Next you will need an HDMI cable. I chose a 1.5m length cable with a very small plug as space is very tight for the location I chose. The power cable that comes with the Apple TV had to be modified by very carefully cutting back the rubber shield surrounding the plug just enough to expose the wires. This made the plug shorter and the cable more flexible so that I could fit it in this location easier. The cable was then covered in heat shrink cable sleeve, paired with the HDMI cable in corrugated plastic cable sleeve and fed down from the top of the dash, behind the monitor, to below the steering column.

3. Now you will need an HDMI-to-RCA converter. Plug the other end of the HDMI cable into this.

4. If your HDMI-to-RCA converter does not come with a power cable you may need to purchase one. The unit I bought is powered by a micro USB-to-USB cable. Plug the micro USB end of the cable into the converter.

5. To send power through the USB cable you will need a USB charger. Therefore you may need a cigarette lighter-to-USB charger. You could plug this into the armrest console or centre console sockets.

6. You will also need power for the Apple TV which runs on mains power. For this purpose I bought a 12volt-to-110volt power inverter with a mains socket and USB socket combined, doing away with the need for a cigarette lighter USB charger.

7. If your inverter does not have a USB charger and you are using the cigarette socket then for a clean look you could get a 12volt cigarette lighter socket and wire it up from behind one of the factory sockets and hide everything away behind the console.

8. Finally, you will need a male-to-male RCA cable. One end plugs into the HDMI-to-RCA converter and the other to the RCA sockets in your armrest console. Then by selecting AUX on your factory audio, sound and video from the Apple TV will be played through the factory audio and displayed on your factory monitor.

Other helpful tools and items for this install are...
1. TV kit. Only being able to watch video when parked sucks so this will fix that problem.
2. A double input/single output audio/video RCA automatic source selector. By customising one of these you will be able to retain the function of your armrest console RCA inputs for less clutter and a very clean look.
3. Heat shrink cable sleeve.
4. Corrugated cable sleeve.
5. Cable ties.
6. A very sharp knife.
7. Wire cutters.
8. Lighter.
9. Pliers.
10. Positive and negative screwdrivers.
11. Panel prising levers.
12. Masking tape to protect dash panels when removing parts.
13. Double sided sticky tape to secure the converter and inverter behind the dash or console.
14. Soldering iron.
15. Wire connector crimping kit.
16. Cutting tool and file to modify the dash panel. I used a miniature drill with mini disc saw blade and sanding bits.
17. Gloves or band aids. Your hands will likely get scratched.
18. Plenty of coffee, energy drinks and a good shower after it's all done.

Wifi. I am using an iphone5 and have the Apple TV tethered to my phone for wifi. The Apple TV will also work from other wifi sources but you need an iTunes account to be able to access iTunes through the Apple TV. I still have some testing to do in this area to find out what all the possibilities/limits are.

Here is an old video of the install before it was finished so you can all see what it's capable of...

Good luck and please post up your results.
