You're right....odd they would list it that way then. So it's a 512 file limit then.

I remember thinking the hard drive feature was so cool, but ehhhh, it's so much more hassle compared to popping in an iPod. Plus it takes too long to rip a CD anyway...

Given that he has Nav but then again, I mentioned CF which is also part of the Nav package. So jokes on me I guess lol

It's in the manual, page 4-37, the spec chart that lists supported media, file systems and file/folder limits.

The file and folder specs aren't listed per source, they're based on whether the car has nav or doesn't:

With nav:
Folder levels: 8
Folders: 255 (including root folder)
Files: 512 (Max. 255 files for one folder)

Without nav:
Folder levels: 8
Folders and files: 999 (Max. 255 files for one folder)

I read it to mean that the limits apply to whatever sources are available for your config, so if you don't have nav/cf you can have up to 999 files and folders for MP3 CDs. I could be wrong and it may just be a mistake in the manual; I have nav so I can't test anyway.

For anyone thinking about relying on the compactflash (or SD=>CF) as your main music source, you should be aware that the ordering of files and the way folders are displayed is not handled very well. Files are ordered based on how you copied the files onto the compactflash card and nested folders are displayed at the root level. So if you have files a.mp3, b.mp3, and c.mp3, they could show up as:
b.mp3
a.mp3
c.mp3

Depending on the order in which you copied them over.

And if you have a folder structure on CF like Rap=>90s=>Paperboy, then you're going to see all of those subfolders folders at the root level in the display screen.

See this thread for a discussion about the limitations and annoyances of using the compactflash slot:
https://www.myg37.com/forums/audio-video-and-electronics/174867-song-order-on-cf-flash.html

I messed around with it for a while and finally gave up and bought an iPod. I have a couple of CF cards that I use to hold random songs when I'm too lazy to get the iPod out of the car and sync them over but that's about it. The song ordering and folder handling was just too aggravating - it's obvious that the CF slot and other parts of the audio system, like the HD MusicBox, were poorly tested and thought out or even intentionally crippled.

At least the iPod interface is decent.

That's good to know, good thing I only got a 1GB CF card 2-4G's would have been overkill.
