TPMS Malfunction - 3 out of 4 dead? Is that even possible?

Hey all,

I've got a 2009 G37x with 150,00 miles on it. Car is in generally great shape, very well maintained, but is presenting with a TPMS malfunction right now. There are obviously many threads on the topic, but I haven't found one that specifically addresses this situation.

I started the car about a week ago and the TPMS light started blinking, eventually going solid. I believe this is indicative of a malfunction. I took the car to a mechanic (after driving 20-30 miles) and using a special Snap On tool he scanned each sensor and told me 3 out of 4 of them are dead and only one of them is showing as alive. It seems extremely unlikely to me that all of the sudden we'd go from no TPMS light to TPMS light and 3 sensors dead.

He quoted me about $180 for each and suggested I just live with it rather than spending the money, but I'm not going to be able to live with this situation.

What should I do? Does this diagnosis make sense?

Thanks!
Brian

Possible, yes. Probable, unlikely, but they are dead/dying regardless.

I have dealt with the blinking/solid idiot light for over 2 years now. When I need tires (in another 2 years or so) then I might deal with them then.

New TPMS sensors from Infiniti are $60/EA. I'm sure there are cheaper alternatives, but, to me it is not worth the money for the parts and labor. Yes, the damn idiot light is annoying but not worth $180+/-. Just my 10¢

Are there alternative aftermarket sensors that will work without triggering the TPMS malfunction light?

If I bought sensors and some new tires, do most shops charge extra to replace / reset TPMS sensors if you're also replacing tires?

America's Tire agree's they're dead due to age and that they can replace them for $70 each; $60 in parts and $10 in labor at each corner. They say these are OEM-spec parts and that the TPMS light will be off once they're all replaced. So, $300 when it's all said and done.

Considering it. Either going to do this, do this plus tires, or sell the car as-is.

Not that crazy for them to die together. Odds are they were all installed at the same time, and probably from the exact same manufacturing batch. When one dies, the rest aren't far behind.

Damn annoying, though. Cost, installation, re-balancing... yuck.

I just purchased a set of 4 from ebay. OEM for $29 shipped. Not sure how much to install but should be $20 each?

You can then link it yourself by watching the youtube videos. Or if you lazy, grab a TPMS scanning tool off amazon. https://amzn.to/2Qb278t

Perhaps the battery is out. I'd say doing them with new tires would likely be more economical. Wait a bit if your tires aren't due yet?

I've had success talking to the tire shop installer, giving them my new valve stem sensors, with instructions to throw out the old and use the new instead. Didn't charge, but said they won't link or otherwise make sure it works either. Works for me since it's easy to DIY from there. If not, no loss, really.

This is true for many Nissan and Infiniti vehicles, including the G35.

However, on the 2010+ G37 it doesn't have the white connector used in the YT videos. You need a tool to wake up the TPMS (link above) and another tool to perform the TPMS registration, where the TPMS ID is copied to the BCM.
