Just got back from a drive on a windy road and am finally ready to admit defeat.

Installed 245/45s on my 17” wheels (09 x) a few weeks back. Tires are loud (sumituomo) but I get what I pay for. They’re very grippy in wet conditions so that’s nice. Also had existing spacers - can’t remember what size - probably 1/2” or 3/4”.

But when I turn the wheel right, I rub. I can not replicate it in my garage and cannot see an area even remotely close to touching the tires when parked and turning the wheel.

But on the highway, even 1/4 turn of the wheel and the noise is deafening. I’m at a loss. Any suggestions?

 

Is your G lowered? Interesting that it's only when you turn it right. Any pics you can provide might help.

 

Have you checked the rear tires? It could be weight transfer, hence why you can't see anything or replicate it in your garage.

 

It is not lowered.

Agreed...it makes me wonder if a bushing or suspension component on the left side is tired (115k miles).

Not sure what to take pics of...there is nothing noticeable upon inspection...

I had not thought of this, and it's a great suggestion. I ran my arms completely around both rear tires - focusing on the left rear - and found no areas that would potentially rub. Again leading me to wonder if the rear left suspension components are just tired and under weight transfer, there is rubbing.

I do not see any obvious damage to any of the tires...so while that's great - it doesn't help me diagnose the issue.

 

Could a tired rack & pinion be causing a vibration in one wheel position only?

 

Problem solved. Wheel bearing. Never had one go bad, so I didn't know what I was hearing. Super easy replacement on the G. Good as new now.

Good to hear (or not hear anymore, lol) I would consider 245/50/17s next tire time though, the 245/45/17s are about an inch shorter than oem diameter.

 

The speedo being off (quite considerably at speed - 90mph = 86mph) is frustrating, but I do like the lower profile. At some point during the summer, I think I will add new suspension components to lower her a bit.

Could 245/50/17 fit on oem 17" rims? Would wider tires give dull turn in feeling?

 

As I wrote in your other post (spamming multiple forums with one question is bad form), 245 is a but too wide for the 17s.

 

Spamming multiple threads was not my intention for sure. I thought I would ask again in a more recent thread after noticing that the previous thread was updated in 2011 the last time.

My reply in that last thread you linked wasn't real precise when I said a 255 on a 7.5" would be a standard mount, the recommended wheel width range for a 255/50/17 for one tire example in the tirerack listings lists a 7-9" range for the first tire in this list (click on specs)

So that said, the 7" would be a pinch mount IMO, and the 9" would be just a bit more than standard. The taller sidewalls of a 50 or 55 series make the stretch or pinch seem less dramatic vs. the short sidewall 35-45 series that are more common with that width tire (on the 18-20" wheel sizes).

Reply was accurate as far as being in the manufacturers recommended wheel width range, but I just wanted to being a little more definitive regarding what would be considered a pinch mount, which IMO a 255 on a 17x7.5 would be on the borderline of.
