New Tires for 09 G37S
New Tires for 09 G37S
Hello all,
I have a 09 G37S with 38K miles and the original tires (19”). I’m starting to slip in the rain, so I know it’s time for new ones. Now I doubt anyone on this board knows less about cars than me, so I’m at a bit of a disadvantage. I called Infiniti, and it will cost about $1500(installed) to replace all four tires with the original Bridgestione Potenzas. The dealer also mentioned that they sell a lot of Hankook ventis tires, which I’ve never heard of, but after searching the forums seemed to get decent reviews on here. Four of those would run about $1000. Does anyone have any advice on what I should be looking for?
Thanks You,
James

Hankook ventis tires are a great choice. I run them and a lot of people run them on here too. However you should not buy them from the dealership. They will rip you off. Get your prices from tirerack.com and take that quote to local tire shops in your area.
Michelin Pilot Super Sports seem to get the best overall reviews but are pricey, Toyo T1s are a great tire too, both are a notch up from the Hankooks & Potenzas. Treadepot has nice prices on Toyos and Andrew over there will get you a nice price if you mention this site.
Also be a good time to go a bit wider w/ your tires, a 245/275 combo is a popular setup.
And like Bluestick mentioned, avoid the dealer for tire deals, you'll get more tire for less money elsewhere. It may be worth calling around, I usually get my tires online and have a local reputable shop do the mounting/balancing, still save a decent amount of cash that way.

I agree with BluestickG.....stay away from the dealership when it comes to tyres. If it cost $100.00 per tyre they will charge $200.00. I guess they need the money more than you. As for WHAT tyre to buy....that depends on where you live, how you drive and what you expect from the tyre. If you get snow where you are, and want a performance tyre you will need a winter only set as well as the summer only tyres you have now(stock potenza). If you don't care so much about performance, but get snow too you can get ALL season tyres. I know it can be a bit overwhelming to a "non car guy" to figure out. I don't know the life expectancy of the stock Potenza's but if if they lasted almost 4 years then they are probably ...too much tyre for your needs and you could go with a less soft compound. The less performance and more mileage tyres are usually a bit less costly. Of course you can't drive as hard and shouldn't go past 120 mph anymore. So if that never happens anyway..and you live in a no snow area... then a decent set of long lasting all season tyres would be a good choice and cost around $500-$600 installed. Don't be afraid of a non Brand name tyre, Hancook was a nobody tyre company 20 years ago, when Bridgestone was still making a crap tyre. IMO the potenza is the worst tyre on the market. They came stock on my SE R Altima and weather cracked between the tread after the first winter. JUNK.

Thanks for all the replies. This “non-car” guy really appreciates.
I would say my top priority is performance (speed and handling). I live in DC and we get very little snow, and I don’t put a lot of miles on my car so tread life is not a big deal for me.
What do wider tires do? Am I just looking for the same brands we’ve discussed…just wider?
I’ve been pricing on tirerack….but I’ve never used them before. Do I just bring that quote to a brick and mortar store and they honor the price?

Get 245/40/19 and 275/35/19
doesn't have to be tire rack but find a low price online for the tires you want and print out the online quote and bring it to shops. They will normally price match. If they don't go to the next tire shop
If you want a good summer performance tire get the hankooks if your on a budget and Michelin pilot sports of your not. Wider tires will give you more grip and a more aggressive look.

So with those sizes your effectively putting the back tires on the front, and getting even bigger tires for the rear, correct?

Yes...lol
I think someone said that you might get a better hole shot, and there might be a little better handling, but the other thing you get it a nicer looking car. They just look better with a bit more meat on the rims. It fills out the wheel wells and gives it a fatter look in the butt.

Hey,
I run a tire shop in SoFla and personally I recommend Falken tires. The price is significantly lower then brands like Michelin and Bridgestone and they are just as good quality if not better. I personally have Falken 452s on my car but if you want a more aggressive looking tire check out the Falken Azenis.

hello again
I put a set of those FALKEN 452's (If I remember right on the model) they were a great sticky summer only tyre. I had them on my 06 Altima SE R. I bought it new in June of 07, and put the Toyo's on in the late fall of 07, When I went to put the stockers back on in the spring of 08 the Potenza's were junk. They were weather cracked inside the tread, and were not safe. They had less than 15,000 kms on them and they were garbage. I will never buy another Bridgestone tyre ever. The Falkens went on instead in early 08. They were quieter than the Potenza and were a much stickier tyre as well. When I traded in my SE R in Nov of 12, it had 85,000 kms on it and the Falkens were still on it. They were on it when it was sold and safetied. I don't do alot of tyre burning, but I do enjoy hard launches and higher speeds...lol I didn't baby those tyres but they held up very well. I rotated them every year, being a directional tyre it was just a front to rear swap every spring. If I could sing I would sing their praises ...lol. If you need winter only tyres look at the Toyo Garret they are a great tyre...period!
cheers
