Steering Vibration New Tires

Hi all.

I needed to replace my 09G37Journey 17" tires (RSA) & picked the Kumho ecsta 4x based on other reviews and had them installed at Americas Tire / Discount Tire. I noticed there was a vibration of the steering wheel at around 70mph. I had them rebalance them but still existed. The third time back they swapped out the tires for some Michelin MXV4 thinking the others were defective.

After putting on the Michelins there was still a little shimmy around 70 so i took them back and then they did a road force balance with the Hunter machine. Now it seems slighly better but no as good as it was with old RSA's.

Any ideas of other issues that could cause this ?

Thanks

Wheel out of round perhaps? Did the measure the radial runout? Any wheel damage?

Perhaps what you're feeling isn't shimmy. Is the wheel actually vibrating/shaking slightly if you take your hands off the wheel? Maybe it's just better road feel due to new tires?

What size did you go with?

There's no wheel damage and the tires are fine according to the road force balance.

If I let go of the steering wheel there is definitely a slight amount of vibration, although that could be due to the road surface, it does seem to change depending on the road surface so maybe because the tires are new, they are transmitting more road noise into the steering wheel. Its definitely very subtle.

If I hold the steering wheel at 6:00 it seems to go away or seem less.

Maybe i'll have my wife drive it see if she notices anything.

I went with the original size 225-55VR-17. The Michelins are very responsive and the steering feels a lot lighter than with the RSAs

Try the wheel without the tire on the balancing machine and check for vibrations.

OEM wheels or aftermarket? If aftermarket, make sure you're centering rings are installed. Check wheel torque and psi as well.

They were stock wheels, not aftermarket.

I dropped the car at the dealer they'll check it out, but service guy thinks it might be a wheel bearing or something like that ...

I have the same problem, have shop balanced 3 times with no help. I finally found a shop with on car wheel balancing. The Tech said there were very little vibrations as he spun the tire to 100 mph and not sure if re-balancing would helps. He did attempt to change some weights and now the steering is butter smooth until 80mph, above that is still vibrates from time to time.
