Thoughts on General Tires for G37s?

Hey Guys,

My mechanic recommended getting "General Tires" instead of Hankook Ventus V12's because of the longer tread life?

Suggestions?

I've had the Hankook's on the rear of mine for about three thousand miles. While I realize that's not a ton of miles the tread still looks as good as the day I put them on. I really haven't noticed that huge a difference in handling between the two except in the rain, the kook's are much better. As soon as the front Stone's wear out I will definitely be replacing them with Hankook's.

I have not tried General tires but Hankooks have a 280-ish AA rating? They won't have tons of longevity. I only had 12k-ish on mine before replacing but that was not the tires fault but camber. I now have ContiExtreme which are a 540-AA rating and should technically last almost 2x the V12's. From a General perspective the G-Max is 480-AA.

Obviously manufacturers specs may be somewhat off.

One is summer and the other is all season and have good reviews. Probably the budget choice in each category imho.

As a general rule, longer tread life means less traction. Are you willing to sacrifice traction for longer tread life?

Hankook V12 is not a bad tire. Decent traction and pretty decent wet handling. Price is not too bad either. If you use them year round they do get slick in cold weather until they heat up somewhat...

I'm running ContiExtreme DWS

Guys thanks for the help. Im just curious how these tires perform and if they'd be the smarter decision over the Hankooks for pure economics of the situation. I drive on a lot of hills, manual transmission, and we don't get snow out here in San Francisco but roads get wet quite often

I have General GMax on my car, they drive pretty good imo, drove in some major rain yesterday, gunned it a a red light, no tire spins, I myself was shocked! The tires are brand new, so I cant comment on the actual tread life, but minimal road noise, they look good, seems to have good grip on corners, & rain. Hope this helps...

Those ratings don't compare across brands. A Goodyear AAA rated tires will perform better in whatever category it's rated in, than a Goodyear AA rated tire. Hankook AAA is better than Hankook AA, but Goodyear AAA isn't equal to Hankook AAA. There's no universal standard for those ratings. They're just whatever the tire manufactorer wants it to be. Some have higher standards than others.

Same can be said with anything UTQG related including treadwear. There is supposed to be a "sicientific method" to get those ratings but no guarantee it happens.

In general you have a performance car and should not expect the associated tires to last as long as those of a Prius
