275 on a 10.5 rim consider stretched?

i have 10.5 rear wheel with a 275/30/20 tire on it. I didnt notice it at first but there are tons of rock chips around the lip of my wheel. This is when I noticed that the rim lip actually protrudes a tiny bit further out than the tire itself. I thought my tire set up was very common but is this a stretched set up?

I am running the yoko s drives on volk gt30's. my phantoms are chipping like crazy so I am wondering the following:

1. Did my tire place somehow put the tires on wrong that would cause this stretched look?

2. If this is normal, what size would I have to put on so that the tire are futher out than the rim itself (so when the front tires kick back rocks it will hit the sidewall and not the rim itself)

I wouldnt say that 275s are a "stretch" on a 10.5" rim. A wider tire may offer the edge of the rim more protection but not much. What you want to do is select a tire that offers a side wall with rim protection built in, only some model tires have this. It's a thicker rubber section right next to the rim section that offers protection mainly from curb rash but would be very effective at protecting the edges of your rims from rock chips. The Michelin Pilot Sport II's that I run have it.

dammit! these phantoms chip so easy it's driving me nuts. I already dropped $700 + mounting for these tires so I will not be getting new tires anytime soon. guess I will just have to get them repainted during winter and get new tires then x1000000

so what width should I be running if I want the lip protection from the tire? I did my research on the forum and seemed like anything wider than 275 would rub when dropped on eibachs. guess I have to repaint the lip and get the right tires next time

Depends on the tire brand and their offering. But I'd assume 295 on 10.5 would be good for most brand. Not sure if they'll fit without rubbing tho.

It's a tiny bit stretched but not crazy, but I have never seen rock chips on my lips so not sure it's the tires fault.

Wonder what other tires have rim protection, I would like those for my next set!

275 is what most people have so that rubbing is not an issue. 285 and above, the chances of your rubbing are much higher (unless your trim the wheel well lining/move the bumper bracket)

from my experience now, know that 275 on a 10.5 with a yokohama s drive tire will leave the rim lip slightly exposed. grippy tire though
