Tire Shelf Life

What is the shelf life for a set of mounted tires?

I just purchased a brand new set of OEM wheels and tires (less than 200 miles) on eBay. I've got 17k miles on my current tires and they have at least half their original tread if not more.

My current rims are in great shape with the exception of my right front. I scraped it for the second time after having it repaired a year ago. It's still repairable. The other three are in great shape.

I was in the market to buy just one new front rim, but the eBay deal for the full set of tires and rims ($1,200) was a no-brainer for me.

If I can't get a commitment from someone to purchase my existing rims and tires, I may just leave them on the car for the year or two it will take to wear down the original set of tires, and then just replace the whole lot with the new eBay set.

So getting back to my original question - What's the shelf life on the new set of tires and rims? They will be stored inside in a dark (in individual boxes), climate controlled environment.

Thanks!

Mike

Looks like 6 years from manufacture date is a guideline.

Cuz Ford and Chrysler models sit on their dealer's lots for 6 years.

If you left it up to the tire maker, they'd say 6 months just to sell more tires. Just like the 3000 mile oil change interval perpetuated by the oil companies and service centers. They actually got the auto manufacturers to buy into this lie years ago too.

From our Tech Center discussion on tire aging.

Our experience has been that when properly stored and cared for, most street tires have a useful life in service of between six to ten years. And while part of that time is spent as the tire travels from the manufacturing plant to the manufacturer's distribution center, to the retailer and to you, the remainder is the time it spends on your vehicle.

I think you will be fine, just have them balanced before you put them on your car.
