Fat Car (note no "s" in "fat"), Weight Reduction Project

As some of you may already know I'm obsessed with taking some weight off of this car. So this is my first update. I opened up the trunk today and starting ripping **** out. I don't have a before pic but I hope you all know what it looks like in the trunk. I'll post some after pics after this post.

I don't have a postal scale so my bathroom scale was the only thing I had to get results. Using Engineering judgement on this, the loss of weight then comes out to 66 plus or minus 3 pounds.

Thats not bad but I was hoping for more.

I also took a gander under the hood and the only thing I could find was the battery cover and the engine cover. Though I was eyeing up some items items that the car could probably do without. I threw those two items in with a couple other items when I did the weigh in so I'd have to guess they come in under 5 pounds.

Pics to follow.

PS - Please no flaming, this is my car I can do what I want with it.

EDIT: Rate this thread with 5 Stars

The pile of parts now sitting in my apartment. :-/

I only keep this in for ***** and giggles. Who needs a tampon?

That last picture, is that something that belongs to the stero? My old car had an amplifyer hidden behind some plastic like that. I took it out and never noticed any change. I'm not gay for stero equipment. If the cars didn't come standard with it I wouldn't even have one.

EDIT: It was dark out when I took these, I'll take a wide angle shot of the empty trunk when I get a chance and some sunlight.

Haha - NICE although i'm not sure why you bought a luxury coupe if you were going to tear it apart, but then again i guess thats half the fun =) What are you doing on the interior to reduce weight ?

The interior will probably remain largely untouched. I don't usually drive around showing off the truck of my car so I had no reservations stripping it. But if anyone has suggestions about lightening up the interior I'm open to them.

If I do pick up a racing seat It'll probably only be used on race days because I like the look of the leather now that I have it.

This car is like a double ended sword in that respect. I need to keep it looking like a luxary car while at the same time modding it to my preference without anyone noticing what I've done.

EDIT: I did some quick math and 66lbs could be substitued for 5HP. Thats not too bad considering its all free. Once the weather gets, and stays, nice for a while I'm going to see about removing some items under the hood that may be a weekend job.

Also it's too bad all this weight came from the rear, thats only huring the weight ratio :-/

I'm sure there's tons of sound dampening materials behind all the paneling that may be removed. I've never really stripped them out personally before on any car but hey, i agree...this fat pig needs to shed some pounds

GWord,

You might want to check out 350z-tech's website, they have an incredible
article on weight reduction. Granted its for a Z, but i'm sure some of the concepts will have similar applications to the G

http://www.350z-tech.com/zwiki/Weight_Reduction_Guide

Hope it helps ...

There is a weight on the tranny that is a good 5-10lbs you can take off. It's there to help offset vibration. I took mine off a few months ago and have not noticed any more vibration.

Battery

Swap the battery with an Odessey Dry Cell battery....its good for 10-15 lbs weight reduction depending on the original battery.

+1 or a Braille battery...they get great reviews...plus changing your battery will take weight off of the front end.

Did you take out your backseat carpet mats?

Now that the trunk is empty, do you notice more of the sound coming from the exhaust?

Gavin get a scraper and scrape all the insulation you see in the trunk... they will be a few pounds also!! If you're going to lose all the trim in the trunk, mind as well get rid of the ugly foam too!

Those boxes you see are part of the Bose amp if remember correctly.

Dude you gotta take out the seats next.. they are soo fn' heavy! Atleast pull off the rear seats.. you probably never drive more than 1 person anyways.

The lightweight batteries die fast in our New England weather..

I think it was what.. roughly.. every 100lb = -.1 sec off your 1/4?

Yes, I can hear the exhaust better now that the trunk is stripped. I'm going to try and PM most of my comments/questions to individuals as to keep the traffic down on this thread (see above post, maybe you can help me out on this one Scootch).

Edit Thanks to whomever removed the useless thread that was previously above this one!

Update: Well I'm having problems getting the back seat out. I got the flip back part out but not the bench. And I pretty much ran out of decent sunlight. I only get about an hour of good time after work and dinner to do this. Here are some pics.

FYI: The flip back part weighs in at 27 pounds +/-0.5lbs. Sorry Matt it's going back in, if I wanted a 2 seater I would have got the Z.

Like I said 27 pounds. Plus a few little parts that I'll weigh in at a later date because of the small amout probably wouldn't even notice on the scale. I can only guess one of the parts was the child seat hook (I won't need that ).

I messed up my drivers side when I did the lower seat DIY so from now on I use protection.

With the back of the seat removed. Wasn't too bad to remove. The seat was lighter then it looks.

Just a better view of the trunk before it got dark. FYI: That black foam **** is hard as rock too.

Update: Again just an hour do get practically nothing done today. I got the back seat bench out. Weighs in at 15 +/- 0.5 pounds. That just took a hole lot of pulling. I Got two more child seat hooks out, only 2 more to go but I need a deep 15mm socket. I'll weigh them later. Some insulation, a pathetic amout really. But now I'm stuck....

I can't get the side panels off and I can't find a thread (DIY) on how to get them off. If someone saw a thread on this please let me know (PM). See pic below.

This is the panel I'm talking about. Both the upper (cream color) and lower (black) one I'd like to remove.

Without the back seat. That black circular plate leads to the gas tank so it's not going to come off, although its reel easy to remove and there is one on the other side too.
