One more thing you could do:

Sun Roof Rails & Motor, Probably weight ~30lbs, You can get rid of that & replace it with a fixed aluminum support just to hold the glass in place. That way, you'll have a fixed moonroof & get rid of 30lbs over your head, which also help reduce center of gravity a lot. I've seen other cars done that, improves handling a lot.

keep us posted.

Sup Gword, I'm glad someone else is shedding a few pounds.

You should DEFINITELY take out the sound deadening material. Go to a auto/hardware/supply store and get a heat gun. Basically melt that stuff off and scrape it with a putty knife. You will be surprised how much is by the drivers seat. I think if you stripped the whole car you could take off 25lbs. All for the cost of a heat gun ($20-$25). Thats a better ration than the battery.

Also, kudos for weighing everything so people like me can keep up. If you do gut the sound deadening, can you weigh it all at once? I would appreciate it!

UPDATE: Sorry no update yesterday and pretty much none today either. Yesterday I got the wrong socket from Sears and today the weather was crappy after I picked up the right one. The only thing I managed to do was get the last child seat latch out. What a b1tch that was. I had to use my 1/2" socket wrench with the 1'6" handle just to get the torque to turn it. All those child latches must be made of steel because they do weigh a good amount in your hand. I'll weigh them later. I have a small pile buiding up in preperation to be weighed.

By sound deading material do you mean the black, solid as rock, foam type stuff? Cause that **** is hard and I don't think a heat gun would help. I'm thinking about getting a chizzle. And some of that stuff I think I want to keep on. Some of It lookes like it keeps metal from the seats banging against the aluminum body. I'll determine that later though.

One nice thing with the seat out I can hear everything that is going on with the rear end of the car. Suspension squeeks just slightly over rough bumps. These wheels pick up a **** load of sand, rocks, dust, ect... But the exhaust just sweet .

I do hear a whining/whistle noise. Where is the fuel pump? Is it in the gas tank because thats the only thing I can think of unless it's the audio equipment in the trunk but it only whistles when the car in running (radio on or not).

I despratly need help getting the panels off the car. Those things on on there good and I don't want to break anything by forcing it too much. A service manual would be nice (2007 G35 COUPE... HINT! HINT!!!).

Tomorrow Boston wants 2-4 inches of snow. I'll probably be walking to work as I've had summers on all winter and now I got rid of even more weight in the rear :-/ Oh well a small price to pay.

Edit: Yes the trunk is HUGE now. I had to climb in it to get some leverage on the socket wrench.

EDIT x2: Well Since its crappy outside I took a look at what I could shead off the rear seat since I'm putting it back in the car after I rip everything out. You know that secret compartment in the rear bench? Well it just got bigger...

Every ounce counts!

I actually had to hammer it off with a flat edge screwdriver because it was plastic soldered into place.

I also notice a part that wasn't connected underneath the seat. Perhaps I should take the car back and demand a new one :-P The cup holder is going back in FYI.

The fuel pump is right where that black plate is underneath your back seat. So after all is said in done are we going to see a roll cage and some other goodies? Also when is the yard sale for parts

Update: Haha Yeah right you wish!

I'm the only one in Mass that has their sidewalks shoveled!

EDIT: I don't think it's quite time for a roll cage yet. I'm not making 10sec 1/4 miles and I don't even have my Novice racing licence yet.

I'm still thinking about what to do with the left overs. Sell them... Really, who the hell needs plactic interior moldings?

I had a brilliant Idea! All that wire tubing has to have some weight to it. Once it gets a little warm outside again I'll strip all that stuff off and place ZIP-ties where necessary.

I definitely like your attention to detail. Good ideas. You empowered me to take out the sound-deadening material in the trunk. From what it looks like in the back seat there is around the same amount as in the trunk.

I worked all day today from 1:30pm until 11:30pm non-stop to get it close to done. I still have an hour of work left. I know you will be excited to hear that from the trunk alone there is MORE than 15lbs of that material. I have been taking pics all throughout the process and will update you with a full review.

Do you mid if I post it in this thread? Or should I make my own?

In my opinion me and you should make a super-lightweight sticky and make it into one big cornucopia of information. I plan on taking DRASTIC steps toward the lightweight process.

Good work,
Zac

So I snaped off two small peices of the sound deadening material to run an expirment. Turns out I only needed one peice because the expirment went so well. The point was to find the temperature at which this stuff gets soft. So I starting heating up some water and pulled out the mecury thermometer. It turns out that this stuff starts to get soft about 65C (or 150F). Thats about what a blowdryer will get up to. And gets real soft at and above 75C (or 170F). The second peice would have been placed in the oven but I didn't need to go any higher in temperature.

So I'm going to go the heat gun route and try to peal this stuff off rather then crack it off with dry ice. Heat guns can get up to 1000F just incase your wondering.

I finally got the side panel off. That weighs in at 5 +/-0.5 pounds. There isn't much behind it as far as weight savings go. Unless of course you want to take the airbags out, speakers, and seatbelts.

It's going back on by the way.

I looked at the side curtan air bags and I just started laughing. I've never seen what they looked like before. It's just a big aluminum tube running the lenght of the windows.

EDIT: I just weighed in the cildseat hooks. 3 +/- 0.5 pounds. I'm going to throw them in with other small parts of an official weigh in at a later time still.

Gword,

One thing I wanted to ask is if you could keep an index of everything you weigh. It would be helpful when you make your big weight loss thread.

When were you planning on tackling the sound matting removal? If you're going to take pictures and do a writeup then I won't. You seem to atleast have some time. If I did the writeup it would be during my lunch at work. Not to mention that my camera is 200 miles away.
