Driving up Grapevine

Hey guys - Im driving my G37 6mt down to LA this weeks. Im a newbie to manual transmissions. How would I go about driving up the grapevine - im sure the 5-south will be empty - so i'll probably be in 6th gear till i hit the pass. Should I be downshifting into 4th, 3rd?

Oh brother! Yeah I would say downshifting to 5th or 4th might be a good idea. Just dont lug the the drivetrain! However watch the weather or ya might be spending a little time on the side of the road. As of this morning Grapevine is shut down! Ya might just want to take the coast anyway. Much more fun of a drive and the veiws are awesome! And one more bonus, Its fairly flat!

Well I do this drive about 2-3 times a week. 6th gear for most part is ok, a few spots you will need 5th and if you get somebody driveing very slow maybe even 4th. its really not a big deal. Just take it slow and enjoy the drive

Good to know we can pull the hills! I once drove a tractor trailer over the vine that was loaded down with 37000 pounds. The tractor had a tired old 290 cummings in it and all I could do on the way up the hill south was 22mph! Longest ride of my life and never again!

ohh she pulls up the hill with no problems at all. and i mean PULLS! Watch out for cops though near Frazier Park, Fort Tejon and the backside of Gorman. Also, there is a strectch after Gorman that the road flattens and on your left you see the California Canal or something. Lots of cops there normally.
