Introduction from a possible new owner
Introduction from a possible new owner
Hey guys. I thought since I have been looking around at G37 coupes that I should join up here to get more information from the informative members of the forum. Since I decided to join I thought I would introduce myself.
I'm a car nut and not a forum newbie. I have been around forums since 2003 when I joined one about a year after I bought my Dodge Stealth. I'm part of several other forums too, but only really active on 4 others at the moment, now I guess 5 including here.
I still own the Stealth, but its been parked the last 5 years. I started a "resurrection" on it last summer, but haven't really messed with it since August.
I currently DD a 2007 Grand Prix GT (supercharged) that I have owned a little over 5 years now. The only mods on it are a 3" highflow catted downpipe and a custom 4" intake. I have an aftermarket hood called the Inferno and what they call the SPO spoiler, which is basically the spoiler that was on the GXP and Special Edition Grand Prix's. I'm looking to part ways with it soon due to the mileage (186k miles) and the fact that its a GM and stuff is just going to start going wrong.
That's the basics of me and my current cars. I have been looking at black on black G37 coupes, with my price limit being around $16,500. I could afford to spend more, but don't really want to spend more.
If I can find an X that would be my first choice due to living in southwestern PA and working in WV where they really don't take care of their roads properly in the winter. I don't really plan on doing much winter driving with it anyway. My plan is to buy the G37 without a trade, then sell the Grand Prix and buy a 4x4 truck or SUV.
I would say the only "problem" I am running into in my search is that there isn't any Infiniti dealerships all that local to to look at an assortment of used ones unless I make a several hour drive, so most of my searching has been through Craigslist and whatever results come up with Google.
Anyway, I might have a few questions about some of the trim differences, problems to look out for, etc and I'll search and if I can't find what I am looking for I will post up my questions at that time. I'll cut my post here, as it is already long winded enough.

Welcome to the forums and best of luck searching for your G! Post up some pictures of your Grand Prix and Stealth!
Also in regards to your search I wouldn't use Craigslist. We have a G's for sale thread here you can search through...
https://www.myg37.com/forums/g-s-fs-331/
Also I'd definitely consider the following sites for when purchasing a vehicle...
www.cars.com
New Cars, Used Cars - Find Cars for Sale and Reviews at Autotrader
Used Cars, New Cars, Reviews, Photos and Opinions - CarGurus
I'd consider 2012+ bc 2010 pre, even though very rare, have a timing gasket issues where if it happens will cost a pretty penny to fix. But as I said it's rare for into happen but Infiniti changed it in 2012+. Also I'd consider an XS which is the awd sport. Better bumper, better suspension, better brakes, ect...
I've seen many G's on the price area you're looking at. You just need to be patient and not jump the gun without doing a little research. Making this introduction wad a very small first post.
Best of luck with your search and if you fall into any dilemmas or concerns regarding your future purchase feel free to ask on the forums. We have a good community of guys here with an extensive knowledge base who are always willing to help out!

Thanks for the links and the advice. Much appreciated. I have previously glanced at the Cars For Sale forum here, that is how I stumbled across myg37 in the first place.
As for my Craigslist search I have only been looking at dealers for sale posts. The majority of individuals who post ads on Craigslist don't know how to put pertinent details in their ad like options or even how to take proper pictures.
As for pics of my cars, I will post some up when Photobucket decides to work again.

I do have a few questions that I hope someone can help me out with.
First, if I decide on getting a pre 2012 and there are no records of the timing gasket issue being repaired (or even occurring) is it something I should do as preventative maintenance?
Also, is there a thread or other link anywhere that lists the changes through the years for the body and option availability between models? I have previously searched and seemed to get conflicting information. I don't need full blown layouts of the differences, just quick bullet points if there is something.
Thanks.

Welcome to the site!
There's been a majority that haven't had issues w/ the gasket. IMO if you can't locate a 2012+ in your budget then just be aware that you may have to deal with it, chances are you won't though.
I'd invest in a OBD II code reader if you don't have one, that way you can just keep it in your glove box and be able to ID if it comes up right away. I have one of these cheap ones and they work great, even cheaper on Ebay
Autel MaxiScan MS300 CAN-BUS OBDII Check Engine Auto Diagnostic Code Scanner Tool - Newegg.com
Nice pics of your DD and your Stealth, too bad the Stealth is in a dormant state.

Sound advice on the gasket. I am more than capable of doing the work if it came up. I guess its something I will just have to monitor if it comes to it. I might have to consider an oil pressure gauge too, though I'd have to find a clean way to install one. I hate pillar gauges, because they create blind spots and I tend to hit my head on them.
Also, I keep a code reader in the glovebox of the Grand Prix. It's pretty much the same as the one in your link.
And yeah I started stripping the Stealth down last year after I lost my job so I could "resto" it. I never intended to strip the bay as far as I did, but once I got started I said eff it and went full bore to make it easier to repaint the bay.
After I went back to work it got shoved on the backburner and then the weather got colder so it has been sitting untouched since. If this rain ever decides to stop I can get back on it and start bolting things back in the bay.
Would you believe the Grand Prix has ~180k miles on it in that pic? I am at 186,700 now, which is part of the reason I am looking to replace it.
Lastly, after looking around and doing some better calculating I am probably going to up my budget. After we get through this weekend with my cousin's funeral and all that I can go talk to my banking institution and let them know what I am after and see about getting a "pre-approved" loan set up so I can better gauge what my final price range is going to be.
Thanks
