I'm looking for a 2009 or newer G37x coupe. Really love the styling - and I just accepted a job that will require some traveling in Erie County / Buffalo NY regions. I want the piece of mind of the AWD, and some comfort and style. I already got preapproved for a loan just need to find the right car.

Nice intro, God luck with your search. If you can up your budget I'd consider a 2012+ model. The pre 2012s have an inferior timing gasket that costs upward of $2k when it goes bad. It's not a real common failure but it's something to be aware of.

At the moment I don't think my budget would put a 2012+ in reach, but I will def keep this in mind. Is there anything that can be done to the earlier models to avoid this? Any signs that it's going bad i should check for on those models?

An error code will pop up when your oil pressure gets very low, but at that point the failure has already occurred. You can have the oil pressure tested but unfortunately that's all you can do to verify that it's ok or not.
Here's one thread on this issue
