Again, I assumed a younger college student, not a 28yo who already has a job going for classes. 18"/19" tires are more $$$, premium gas is more, etc.

When I was in college, there were weeks where I lived on ramen noodles, saltine crackers, and Slim Jims. I definitely didn't need to upkeep a luxury performance car.

That gave me a good laugh. Why do you suggest passing?
The GF doesn't mind the college chicks coming over every now and then but I don't spend money on those. She eats up enough of my budget as it is LOL

I can see how it's easy to make that assumption. No biggie.
I'm no stranger to a tool box. I opened and ran an auto shop for 2 years and owned several cars throughout that process. Most fun was the 87 Supra N/A. Then the e30. I'm getting tired of ****box cars and having to wrench on them all the time and I just haven't been able to make myself ok with driving a boring ***/ ugly car any more.

If I wind up with one (which it seems like I will eventually) I'll be heading for the aggressive look soon enough . That IPL/ Aero kit is pricey as **** but it looks good. And the stock wheels probably wont last more than a year before I'm tired of them.

and I cant imagine the upkeep on a G is anywhere near a 25 year old BMW E30.

I just dont think a 7+ year old car with 100k is worth it. $15k will otherwise buy a nice low mileage FWD car. Focus on school. Plenty of time later in life to blow money on cars.

Gotchya. And there is truth to that. I'm hoping to get out of there with $18k @ 72k miles. Logically it hurts but logic hasn't been working on this decision.

first car i bought after college was a 1987 Porsche 928 S4 (my dream car). it was 10 years old at that point and actually reliable.
flash forward to a year and a half ago - i bought another '87 S4. leaks everywhere, all fuel hoses needed replaced to prevent fires, old mechanical relays acting up ... sold it after a year.

ive been spoiled by reliable Japanese cars for too long for that crap.

Deals are out there if you are set on a G. I picked up a very clean 09 sedan with 75k for $15K. Be patient but quick to make contact when you come across one.

Well I'm not sure where that car is but I would have taken a damn hard look at it if I had seen it before I signed the papers.

I pushed the dealer pretty hard and walked out the door at $18k. I'm happy but still searching for that third pedal. We'll see how long it takes for me to stop trying to grab my own gears.

Thanks for the info and advice folks!

Congrats on making the deal, looks like a clean one for sure
If you find the 7AT a bit laggy and hesitant with the shifts around town you might need the most current reflash. Dealer should be able to see if your G has had it done.
Enjoy your new ride

I specifically asked about the TSBs, even provided them the "ISB" numbers. Said they didnt have TSBs on it and the ITBs are only done when customer complains of specific events.

I have noticed a little more lag on the go button than I would like. How can I convince them to flash it? Will it cost me anything?

I have access to an autoshop with open pits. The salesman was pretty thrown off when I pulled into the shop on the test drive and spent 30 minutes going through it top to bottom. I'm a pretty picky dude and I'm impressed with how clean it is. We live near the gulf of mexico and the salt is in the air constantly. Every vehicle winds up with a good amount of surface rust if you dont take good care of it. This one has zero. No leaks or evidence of. I was hesitant about the paint because the engine bay and trunk are a slightly different color but I think they only apply the finishing paints and clear coat to the exterior. I could find zero evidence of any major damage.

It has a couple of small dents on the rear wheel wells and... thanks to not being used to a wide car, now a bit of curb rash. I'm really kicking my own *** over that one. Never rashed wheels before. Ever. first 6 hours and I manage to scrape these. Grrr...

In any case, thanks for the welcome! I'm looking forward to babying this one!

You'd have to go into the dealer and specifically say the AT has lag, hesitant shifts, etc. As far as a charge, YMMV some do and some don't, more than likely they will charge though since you didn't buy the vehicle there and don't have any service history w/ the delaer. Wouldn't hurt to go in w/ a friendly attitude and see what happens.

And sounds like you gave this a good inspection, nice to have that piece of mind. Sucks about the rashed wheels though, been there-done that

it may need a software flash, but you could try driving it like you stole it for a while - it may have "learned" some sluggish driving habits.

I should probably have expected it, but these 'learn' driving habits?
If so are there wear factors involved in it relearning a new driver?

Just what kind of costs would be expected after 80k on these cars? Known issues? High priced replacement parts?

Dude...your 28 with a good job, you are financially smart enough to have zero debt, and your frugal enough to set a $15K ceiling on your behoove purchase. These facts all say your a solid individual. I'm willing to bet that you own your own home. Right? You gotta mortgage? Any kids? Planning on having them?

Of the answer to my questions are yes...then you have 2 options here. You can continue down the path you've lived that got you this far and buy a Honda or Toyota. Which would be the smart decision. Or you could realize that you deserve a little reward for all you dedication and planning...raise your dang ceiling and go get yourself a nice 2-3 year old G37S! Put a few grand down on it and you can mess around and have really low payments.

I've saved, invested, had kids and bought a home. My boys are 5 & 3 years old. I just finished getting my daughter a 2005 Audi with 70,000 miles on it. The way I figured it was if I don't reward myself now then I'll never be able to. Yes I would be able to buy anything I wanted once my boys are in college. But I don't wanna be 50 when I'm driving my dream car. I want to be 30!!! Raise your ceiling and make some moves so you don't feel the impact of the price being larger. Lower those payments buddy. Get a G37. You won't be disappointed. Yes the gas mileage sucks. But the car looks and drives like sex and the reliability is off the charts!! Buy buy buy
