Newbie from the Subaru world
Hi all. I am not an owner yet, but will likely be in a week or so. I'm coming from the Subaru world where I have (soon to be had) a 2007 STi that I've had since new. With a family, the STi just isn't practical anymore. My parents have owned seven Infiniti's, currently with a G35 and a G37x. I am eyeing a 2012 G37x and will post pics once I have it.
About me:
As mentioned, I'm coming from the Subaru world and trading the STi is PAINFUL. I was VERY active a moderator at IWSTI (STi forum) for years. I used to instruct with NASA Mid-Atlantic, but have not been very active for the past couple of years. I'm a career fire Lieutenant with a focus on HAZMAT and work part-time for an environmental remediation company. Originally from MA, now living in PA, looking to move BACK to MA and change careers into the environmental remediation/response field.
I'm a driver. Always have been. Glad to be here and looking forward to learning and contributing as I can. Any questions, please fire away!
Now for some Stickies...

Going with a coupe or sedan? Also, some people regret going with AWD vs. RWD because of the lack of mod capabilities. Seeing that you are coming from an STI makes me believe you like to mod. Welcome to the site.
Going with a sedan, AWD. I LOVE modding, BUT I'll never be able to turn the G into the STi and I don't want that anyway. I'll get the windows tinted and possibly F/R sways/endlinks. (I don't know enough about the chassis and suspension to make that decision yet.) Once the AS tires need to be replaced, I'll probably do a dedicated summer/winter tire and wheel setup.
Thanks for the welcome!

Glad you found us. Sure you don't want a 6MT RWD and just run snows in the winter?
At any rate, good luck w/ your transaction and hope it works out well for you. Keep us posted, sounds like you can bring a lot to the site.

You'll be surprised by the G (compared to the STI) when they are relatively stock for stock. For instance, my car with was at least 3-5 seconds faster on the track than my buddies 2013 STI and our mods were similar. Yes, driver mod could have been a huge factor but I did pull on him every time in the straights. Obviously the STI has more capability being FI but the G can definitely hold its own for being an entry level luxury sedan. LOL. Either way, both are great cars and I'm interested to hear your impressions once you get one.
I'll be sure to post my impressions.
Thank you for the welcome and I will be sure to keep everyone posted! As for contributing, I have a LOT to learn about the G, but there are a few areas I have a bunch of experience and I will chime in when I can.

Welcome boxtwo!
To me the G37s sedan 6MT is a happy medium between an sports car thats impractical for a family, and a "family sedan"
A couple years ago when we had our son, i traded in my g37 coupe 6MT and bought a nissan altima. I thought i was ready to move on from the manual trans and RWD, but I was wrong and I was missing it every time I drove. Now I'm back having just picked up a used '13 G37s6MT sedan...Plus I want my son to grow up seeing daddy drive a 'stick shift'...even if they'll be extinct by the time he's driving
The 6MT is an issue if my wife would ever be needing the car, but we'll work through that. (and in a true emergency she has just enough MT knowledge to drive it). I think with a proper winter tire setup you would be ok with RWD even in the northeast.
GL with whatever you decide is best for you!
where in PA are you located. I'm over in the philly burbs.

Thanks Falker!
I considered the MT, but my wife doesn't really know how to drive it and we want a vehicle that she will be able to drive any time. This was part of the issue with the STi. She was learning the MT on it, but was scared to death and to be honest, it is a tough clutch.
I hope the MT doesn't go extinct! My daughter loves riding "in daddy's race car" but there isn't much room for a growing 4 y/o.
I'm in Fairfield, just outside Gettysburg at the MD border.

Hi boxtwo... As I detailed in other threads here... I really wanted the 6MT so I could get the "real" sport package, not just the "appearance" package but... in the end, with a 250'+ long uphill driveway in Western PA, I decided to play it safe and get the x. Seriously... My wife would call me at work when her van with Blizzaks couldn't make it up the driveway. "I'm stuck again!!!" Sigh... What do you want me to do, honey? Push it up the hill from my office?
I did a bunch of HPDEs with NASA and informally instructed at Beaver Run/Pitt Race near my house for a number of years. I had a MINI Cooper S worked over nicely and a M Coupe with Dinan S2. With two kids and other priorities... a dedicated fun/track car just wasn't in the picture any more.
I got an xS and am very pleased. It's fun enough for now, practical and gets around in the snow well. I got my 2011 xS with Premium and Nav, CPO, for $24K, 26K miles... If that helps put your purchase in perspective. Blue slate as well...
Edit: It's not impossible to teach your SO to drive a manual. Just don't do it yourself. Both I and a good friend did it... After the fact, and words spoken we regretted, we both agreed that "swapping" would have been the better way. You're more patient with someone that's not your SO. Find a friend to teach your SO. It'll save a lot of grief in your relationship.

I've always had a soft spot for black cars, but after trying to keep the STi clean for 8 years, I need a break. If the "graphite" was more of a gray, that would have been the color I picked, but the blue slate looks great. (The black malbec looks AWESOME...)
Part of the decision to go with a fairly basic G was that I have a 1971 911s sitting in the garage in need of TLC. I can't do two project cars simultaneously. Having driven my parents' 2009 G, it is plenty of power and performance for me...for now at least!
My wife got her Accord stuck on a small hill a few years ago. I had to pull her up to the house. That was on new tires too, which led to us getting her a Forester, which she loves.
Very cool on the NASA experience! I am an instructor and (was) a time trialer with NASA Mid-Atlantic. Lots of time at Summit Point and VIR.
Great advice for teaching manual to my wife! We went out in the STi a dozen or so times and she picks it up well, but it takes her some time and she gets frustrated and then she thinks I am getting frustrated...and I am sure you KNOW the rest! Funny thing is that she really wants to learn to drive it, but is scared to "damage my baby," to which any amount of persistence on my part that "you won't" will matter.

UPDATE
Hopefully recovering from being sick...now a week-long butt-kicking.
My wife drove it and looked it over earlier this week and she really liked it. They are addresing all of the concerns I had. I also tossed out the data I found (via another thread RE warrantes, in here) and they didn't even flinch for an 8/120 wrap for $1700 and splash guards. Overall I am really happy with the deal. Will keep you all posted. Looking at delivery end of the week as they repaint the front bumper.

April 25, 2015: The last ride in the STi. Bittersweet. I have a loaner for now (2013 version of the G37) pending a leather repair.
I did notice that the stock fogs are horrible. Need to look at an upgrade to get a little more light.
