New G Owner, Long time Nissan lover

I recently traded in my 2000 Nissan Maxima with 176k miles for a 2009 Infiniti G37x coupe with 39k miles. Talk about an upgrade! I loved my maxima it was a 5 speed and I really wanted a G with awd since I live at 7000 ft elevation and get a lot of snow. I drove for 2 hours to get what I thought was the perfect car for me.
The day after I bought my G37 I drove it back home and after I parked it I could smell coolant coming from the car. I popped the hood and saw that the top radiator hose had some corrosion on it. It seemed weird to me that such a strong smell would be coming from a radiator hose. I called the dealer and the told me to bring it in whenever I was able. It took me about a week but when I got it in the technician didn't think such a strong smell could be coming from the hose as well. He put it in the air and sure enough I had a blown head gasket. They sold me a car with a blown head gasket! I was pissed! Luckily it was covered under the original factory warranty. I also made the dealer replace the other side since one side went who knows when the other side will go. The car was at the dealership for a week and a half getting repaired.
After everything I went through I miss my old maxima I'm hoping for the best and honestly I will probably keep this car for only 1-2 years and trade it for a FJ, CRV, or WRX. I wish this car was everything I thought it would be but it's been nothing but trouble. I'm playing with the idea of throwing some mods at it but still not set on the idea. I would probably do some choiceful exhaust, intake, and suspension upgrades if I did anything.

Congrats and sorry for your troubles. Your issue sounds rare, I haven't heard of anyone else reporting it on the forum. Do you know why it had a head gasket issue? Massive overheating problem?

Sorry for the problems you have already had. But like BB said, the G37 is a very reliable vehicle. But stuff happens.

Interesting to hear you say that you think you will only own the vehicle for a year or 2. Your purchase of the car seems bittersweet.

I am in a bit of a dilemma myself. I am ready to buy a new vehicle in the next month or so. However, I am having second thoughts about getting a G37. Starting to consider a 4 Runner.

I hope you have no further problems with your G. Enjoy the vehicle!

Looking at your photos I wonder if the radiator has ever been replaced. Hard to tell but it looks kind of new, as does the upper hose. If so, it may have had a leak and was replaced by the previous owner. A severe overheating caused by a leak that wasn't properly taken care of could have been the root of the blown head gasket. It could have also caused other associated problems like warping the heads slightly or a small crack in the block. Not trying to terrify you, just sharing things form my experience. You may want to have it thoroughly checked out by an independent shop to see if they can find anything.

I'm sorry to hear about your dealership issues. That type of problem is definitely not normal for the G37. This car should be every bit as reliable as your maxima was.

Welcome to the forum, the background in your pictures looks like some pretty good driving country. If you do an exhaust, intake, and suspension upgrades, you'll be right up there with most of the modders around here.

The dealership was trying to tell me that the seals went on the head gasket because it was extremely dry. I honestly don't believe them.

That sounds extremely like bullsh!t. Maybe it's not, but it sure sounds like it to me. Look for indication that the engine has possibly overheated like replaced cooling system parts. Overheating can blow a head gasket. So can preignition or detonation. I've never heard of it occurring form "extreme dryness" WTF does that even mean???

That really stinks!! But the car does look beautiful, esp that color. The g37 or 370 gt skyline is my dream car! Well actually it was the 10th gen skyline or R34, but we can't get those here in the US, so the closest to that would be the g35 or g37, I hope to buy one too sometime soon. Just gotta get financing issues down. Well that's my 0.02 good luck with whatever you choose as your next ride!
