some old head in a S500

was parked next to me at this redlight on 193 toward Bowie... you know how at a redlight, people dont usually park right next to each other where you can make eye contact... well this old head in his 50s moved his car up right beside mine.. I didnt make eye contact i just scratched my head and listend to my music...

I was just chillin and took off like normal and shifted early around 2500 rpm from first into 2nd gear (landed around 1500 rpm-ish)... just as I got in 2nd, dude decided to suddenly give me the WOT treatment so the race basically started off a 15mph roll. By the time i reacted, he was already like a car ahead of me. So i gave him the WOT too, and wasnt able to gain anything on him through most of 2nd, but i didnt loose any ground either.

it wasnt until around 5k rpm when I started walking him slowly, by the time i hit 7k rpm i was much faster, and ended up easily pulling ahead of him by the middle of 3rd gear. Then he shut down and I did too. He obviously had an automatic slushbox mated to his monster 5.0 liter V8, i can tell it was shifting prematurely for him.. otherwise that car with such a huge engine really isnt that fast. I probably would have destroyed him had I downshifted back to 1st when it all started.

after he shut down I slowed down to his speed and got right next to him and just looked at him. He wouldnt make eye contact and then he tried to WOT me again, but this time I was at around 5000rpm already, and the sweet part of the powerband. Id immediately pull 2 cars ahead of him, then hed shut down again... and then i would shut down again, match his speed and stare at him again. Dude didnt have the guts to make eye contact.

now terry, tell me which part of this dream did you actually pull over 3k rpms?? lol

 

my rule of thumb is always shift before 3k rpm. until I get out of skool and find a job, gas cost too damn much for me to rev beyond 3k. I be shifting around 2k actually most of the time and end up in 6th gear around 40mph. i only drive fast when devon is around, hes a bad influence on me before I met devon i wouldnt have even messed with this old head.

i dont even think the g would let you downshift to first @ 15mph...maybe 5

 

iono, i guess i havnt tried 2nd to 1st shift around 15mph before, i figure id land around 4k rpm or something.

 

i just tried it, landed perfectly around 4k rpm, all i had to do is rev match about 1500 rpm.

 

jeeez.. i never downshift into 1st.. :P

s class Benzes only have autos so yeah he was definitely automatic

 

My friend has a s 500 .yes it is a very heavy v8.But Terry you are still a grass hopper when it comes to the 6 speed .You just said it downshift to first = pain and hardship.Like the previous post said it is possible you wouldn't have been able to do it. LOl.

 

Ok, so I went up to 6900 in my first gear today to see where the RPM's were during the speed, but it seemed like 1st gear went up to 21-22 mph, :P I wouldn't down into 1st :P I know I would mess something up haha

 

yeah in this case, its probably not worth it in that situation i guess.
*actually im not so sure, cause i was at 1500rpm-ish in 2nd gear, it sure took a while before the car hit the sweet part of the powerband around 5k rpm. popping it back to first might still be faster. ill go test it later today
